ABOUT THE GAMES
• Millersville clinched the PSAC East and a No. 1 seed in the PSAC Tournament a week ago but Kutztown comes into the weekend in a fight for the fourth and final playoff spot from the East. The Golden Bears are the on the wrong end of tiebreakers with Bloomsburg and Shippensburg, trail both in the standings by one game, and Bloomsburg and Shippensburg go head-to-head this weekend. That puts Kutztown in a position where it has to win all four from the Marauders--something that no team has done since 2012.
• The record watch is on for several Marauders.
Tyler Orris, already the program career leader in at-bats, runs and assists, is 20 assists away from the PSAC record of 636. Orris is also just five steals shy of Ernest McCoy's longstanding Millersville record for stolen bases (97). Orris is also tied for fourth in career doubles (43) and third in walks (87). He ranks eighth in PSAC history in hits, 10th in games played and sixth in steals.
Dan Stoltzfus is just RBIs shy of Zach Stone's 158. Stoltzfus' current career batting average of .379 is fifth-best all-time and the highest by a Marauder since Mike McCarter completed his career with a .410 average in 1991. Stoltzfus is also five homers short of Ryan Brink's school record of 26. In the pitching ranks,
Jim McDade has 258 innings pitched--just 20 short of
Chris Murphy's record. McDade's 23 wins ranks him third all-time.
• Both Dan and
Mitch Stoltzfus have shots at the single season hits record, which is held at 80 by
David Summerfield, Orris and Stone. Dan enters the weekend with 68 hits and Mitch has 69.
• Millersville held on to its No. 1 national ranking in the NCBWA Poll but fell into a tie for second in the Collegiate Baseball Poll. Dating back to last season, the Marauders have spent 11 of the last 13 weeks in the NCBWA's top 10.
•
Mitch Stoltzfus ranks fourth in the PSAC in hitting with a .445 average, is second in RBIs with 54 and third among PSAC East players in homers with nine. He is certainly a candidate for All-PSAC East honors with those numbers. He would be the first Marauder catcher to be All-PSAC East since now-director of athletics
Miles Gallagher in 2009 and is looking to be the first first team selection since
Jon Shehan in 2004.
• While
Brandon Miller,
Cordell Shannon and
Jim McDade have all won PSAC East Pitcher of the Week Awards this season,
Reid Anderson has been on a roll as the game four starter. Anderson has not walked a batter in his last two starts while striking out 12. In his last four starts, Anderson has totaled 24 innings, allowing only 16 hits and four earned runs. He has not allowed more than four hits in seven consecutive starts.
• Often overshadowed by the exploits of Miller and McDade, Shannon is having a historic freshman campaign. He is just 7 2/3 innings away from Tim Mayza's freshman record for innings pitched and is tied with Mayza and Tad Barton (both in 2011) for most wins by a freshman. He ranks eighth in the PSAC in ERA (2.79) and 10th in innings pitched.
SERIES HISTORY
• Millersville has won or split every series with Kutztown since 2008, but prior to Coach
Jon Shehan's arrival, the Marauders lost every series from 2001-2007, going 5-23 in that stretch against the Golden Bears. Millersville's last three wins came by a combined score of 26-1. The clubs met seven times in 2014 with four of the games decided by one run. Kutztown won the PSAC Championship game 1-0 while Millersville knocked the Golden Bears out of the regional with a 3-2 win in the opening round and a 3-1 win in the semifinal.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
• Kutztown has lost 10 of 12 since starting splitting with PSAC playoff teams East Stroudsburg and West Chester and taking two from Mansfield. The slide began with it was no-hit in back-to-back games of the April 11 doubleheader at Mansfield. Since then, it has lost three of four to Shippensburg and Bloomsburg.
• While Millersville is second in the league with a .353 team average, Kutztown is last out of 16 teams with a .249 average and a .332 on base percentage. Its 72 errors is also third-most in the league. Only Alec O'Dell owns a batting average above .300.
• The team's ERA is 5.75 but has struck out 340 batters, which ranks second in the PSAC. Ace Matt Swarmer is second in the league in strikeouts with 81. He is 3-4 with three complete games and a 3.86 ERA.
