Exton, Pa. - Bret Howey finished second and Robby Rowe took fourth to lead the Millersville men's golf team to a third-place finish at the two-round Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invitational.
The tournament began on Sunday but the opening round was not completed until Monday. Howey matched his career-best round with a 1-over-par 73 and led the tournament after the first 18 holes. Howey posted a 5-over-par 77 in the second round to finish as the runner-up, two strokes behind Mercyhurst's Blaze Hogan, who fired back-to-back 74's. Howey's finish was the best of his career and his first top 10 since Sept. 15.
Rowe followed an opening round 77 with a 2-over-par 74 in round two. The round vaulted him from ninth into a tie for fourth, giving him his fifth top-10 of the season and 21st in 39 career events.
Indiana (Pa.) placed first with a 611 total--four shots in front of Mercyhurst and 10 shots clear of Millersville. The Marauders' third and fourth scorers were Rodney Anders and Connor Sheehan. Anders tied for 15th at 15-over, and Sheehan tied for 18th at 17-over. Freshman Axel Hartman entered the tournament as an individual and while his score did not count toward the team score, he posted rounds of 76 and 75 to match his career-best 36-hole total and tied for fourth.
Millersville travels to the IUP Invitational next week. The Marauders entered the week ranked seventh in the NCAA Atlantic Regional and can solidfy their position for the NCAA Super Regional with another strong finish.
