Chestnut Hill, Pa. - The Stoltzfus cousins combined for four hits and five RBIs Tuesday at Chestnut Hill, lifting the No. 3-ranked Millersville Marauders to a 9-7 win--their 19th in a row.
Millersville improved its season record to 20-1 and pulled within one win of the PSAC record for consecutive wins which was set at 20 by West Chester in 2012. The Marauders allowed a season-high in runs and also committed a season-high four errors but survived a rally by the homestanding Griffins after building a 7-2 lead early.
Dan Stoltzfus, who set the Millersville single-season home run record in 2015, had played his first 20 games without a homer in 2016. That drought ended on Tuesday with a two-run bomb in the eighth inning.
Mitch Stoltzfus entered the week with the No. 3 batting average (.541) in Division II and continued his hitting ways with two singles and a pair of RBIs. He extended his hitting streak to 19 games and has six hits in seven RBIs in his last three.
The Marauders fell behind 2-0 in the first inning after a fielding error opened the door to a pair of unearned runs off of starter
Kyle Peterson (2-0). The lead didn't last for Chestnut Hill, though, as the Marauders pushed six runs across in the second. Millersville totaled three walks, a hit batsman, three singles and three stolen bases in the inning.
John Brogan,
Aaron Taylor and M. Stoltzfus all recorded RBIs in the inning.
Millersville extended its lead to 7-2 on D. Stoltzfus' RBI double in the sixth, but in the bottom of the inning, Chestnut Hill started to creep closer, scoring a pair of runs off of reliever
Eric Ligda. After Millersville's
Matt Ulrich and
Mike Mock combined for 1.2 shutout innings, Chestnut Hill picked up two more in the eighth and another unearned run in the ninth.
Cody Stoneback, who started the inning, was able to overcome a fielding error, a walk and RBI single by getting a ground out and ending the game with the tying run on first base. The save was Stoneback's third.
Millersville hosts West Chester in a PSAC East showdown on Friday at 1 p.m.
