Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - Following a season in which he led the Millersville University baseball program to a NCAA Division II runner-up finish, Jon Shehan was named Chuck Tanner Collegiate Baseball Head Coach of the Year by the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh. Shehan will be recognized at the 10th annual Chuck Tanner Awards Banquet on Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Rivers Club in Pittsburgh.
The award is named in the honor of the late Chuck Tanner, who was a former manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates and a man who served the game of baseball and the Greater Pittsburgh community with great distinction. Along with Shehan's collegiate award, the organization will also recognize Dusty Baker of the Washington Nationals as the Major League Baseball Manager of the Year. Additional awards being presented are the Tanner Lifetime Achievement Award, the Tanner Memorial Award, and the Sally O'Leary Distinguished Women in Baseball Award.
"My dad grew up in Western Pennsylvania, so I grew up a Pirate fan," said Shehan. "Bedtime stories consisted of Mazeroski-Alley double plays, Stargell bombs, and Clemente rocket launcher throws coming in from the right field corner at Forbes Field. As much as I loved the Pirates of the early 90s—Bonds, Bonilla, Van Slyke, Drabek--It was the golden age of the Pirates, the 1970s,that excited me the most. Chuck Tanner is one of the game's best managers to ever step on the field, winning championships with the A's and the Pirates. More importantly, he made a major impact on the city of Pittsburgh off the field. This award isn't just about success on the field, it is about winning off the field as well. The success we have had on the field, in the classroom, and serving the local community is a major credit to our players, coaching staff, support staff, and administration. I can't thank them enough. This award is just as much about them as it is about me. It is an honor to be mentioned in same sentence with Chuck Tanner let alone receive an award named after him. As a long time Pirate fan, I am sure that my late grandfather is smiling down from heaven. My dad is excited too. Thank you to the Pittsburgh Rotary Club for this amazing recognition."
Shehan's 2016 Marauders set both program and PSAC records with a 53-7 record, going 25-3 in PSAC East play en route to a fourth consecutive division crown. Millersville won the NCAA Atlantic Regional for the third time since 2011 and went on to reach the best-of-three series for the national championship, becoming just the third team from the PSAC to play for the title.
Shehan has become Millersville's all-time leader in wins and winning percentage in just nine seasons. His clubs have won six PSAC East titles. In 2016, three of his players were selected in the MLB Draft and another signed a free agent contract.
Proceeds from the Chuck Tanner Awards Banquet help to fund the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh operations and many of its international foundations. The banquet is open to guests and tickets can be purchased at chucktannerbanquet.com.
