Urbana, Ohio - A third-place finish from Robby Rowe and five golfers in the top 20 helped Millersville to a runner-up finish at this weekend's Urbana Invitational held at Urbana Country Club.
The Marauders posted a 42-over-par team score and finished six shots behind West Chester and 16 ahead from third-place Shawnee State. Millersville trailed West Chester by six after the opening round but failed to gain ground as both teams closed with a 311 total.
Rowe opened with a 1-under-par 71 and held the first round lead, but he slipped into third place after shooting a 7-over-par score in the second. West Chester's Corey Smith, who entered the tournament as an individual competitor and with his score not counting for his team, followed his first round 75 with a final round 72 to edge Rowe by three shots and teammate Tyler Maiman by two.
Like Smith, Marauder freshman Alex Hartman was not in his team's lineup. That was unfortunate for Millersville as Hartman shot rounds of 76 and 75 to finish at 7-over-par and in fourth place. Rodney Anders was the No. 2 scorer in Millersville's lineup, finishing in a tie for ninth for his first career top-10 finish. Bret Howey posted a 13-over-par total and finished in 13th. Connor Sheehan and Matt Keim tied for 17th.
Millersville has scored a third place and runner-up finish in its first two tournaments. The team travels to Erie for the Mercyhurst Invitational next weekend. Millersville was the runner-up at the event in 2014 and won the tournament in the fall of 2012.
