Erie, Pa. - Millersville men's golf opened the season with runner-up and third-place finishes but stumbled at the Mercyhurst Invitational, finishing 10th in a 17-team field.
Millersville's 619 two-round total was its highest of the season and highest score in a 36-hole tournament since the Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invitational in 2014. It was also the first time since March of 2014 that the team had finished in the bottom of half of a tournament--a stretch of seven events.
The Marauders were hardly out of the mix after posting a first round 306. They entered round two in fourth place and just nine shots behind eventual winner Queen's University of Charlotte. But four of the five Marauders in the lineup shot higher scores in the second round and posted a 313. Nine other teams shot lower scores on Monday, and Millersville was one of only seven teams to follow its first round with a higher score in the second.
Despite the team finish, Rodney Anders produced one of the best tournaments of his career, tying for 13th with teammate Robby Rowe after shooting rounds of 74 and 77 for 7-over-par total. His 2-over-par first round and two round total of 151 matched a career-lows for the senior.
Rowe backed up a 3-over-par 75 with a 76 in the second round. His finish marked just the fifth time in the last 13 tournaments that he finished outside the top 10. Sophomore Connor Sheehan was the lone Marauder to improve in the second round. He followed an 8-over-par 80 with a 6-over-par 78 to finish in a tie for 51st. Axel Hartman finished one stroke and five spots behind Sheehan. Bret Howey, who had turned in a pair of top-15 finishes to start the season, placed in tie for 72nd.
Millersville takes a week off before playing in the California Invitational on Oct. 12-13.
