Daniels, W.Va. - It just so happens that one of the most important tournaments of Millersville's season is its first. Against a loaded field of 18 teams at the 54-hole Glade Springs Intercollegiate Championship, the Marauders finished in third place Tuesday afternoon.
Millersville entered 2015 with three consecutive trips to the NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional, and it is no coincidence that the team finished as the runner-up in the event in 2013 and 2014. The Glade Springs tournament features teams from the PSAC and Mountain East--all programs battling for one of the few spots in the postseason. Millersville's third-place finish Tuesday shows a team set to contend for a fourth straight trip to the super regional.
The teams played 36 holes on Monday and followed with 18 holes on Tuesday. The Marauders opened with scores of 301 and 300, and stuck in third place with a 313 total in the final round. The Marauders finished three shots behind runner-up West Chester while California (Pa.) used impressive rounds of 292 and 296 on Monday to distance itself from the pack and eventually score the win. Millersville's 300 in the second round was the fourth-best team score of the event.
Califonia's Tyler Robinson and Kirby Manown finished one-two on the individual leaderboard, with Robinson shooting an impressive 5-under-par 211. Millersville placed three in the top 11--the only team to do so. Senior Robby Rowe took fifth with a 6-over-par total. He shot back-to-back 73's to open the tournament. It was third time that Rowe finished in the top 10 at the event, placing second in 2013 and third in 2014.
Sophomore Bret Howey, who finished 22nd in the tournament a season ago, tied for ninth at 10-over-par. Sophomore Connor Sheehan landed two strokes ad two spots behind Howey. Sheehan's even-par 72 in the second round was the low-round of the tournament for any of the Marauders. The Marauders' No. 4 scorer was rookie Matt Keim. Keim played in a tie for 36th with rounds of 78, 81 and 79 in his first collegiate action.
Millersville will see many of the same teams this weekend at the Urbana Invitational in Ohio. Play starts on Sunday.
