Football's Jeff Richter to Receive University's Distinguished Civic Leadership Award
4/7/2015 9:44:00 AM | Football, Community Service
Millersville, Pa. - For his work in organizing the community service efforts of the Millersville University football program, assistant coach Jeff Richter has been named a recipient of the Millersville University Distinguished Civic Leadership Award which is presented annually by the The Civic and Community Engagement and Research Project (CCERP) and the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership (CSIL).
The awards presented recognize individuals or organizations that make noteworthy civic and community contributions of local, national or international impact and who have been a catalyst for encouraging civic engagement on the part of others. Richter serves as the community service coordinator for the football program, assisting in the implementation of the Marauder Scholar Program. In his two years as the coordinator, the program has produced more than 2,300 hours of community service in Millersville, Lancaster and the surrounding areas.
"In being a college assistant football coach, Jeff has a role as a mentor to more than 100 young men a year," said Breitbach. "His influence and assistance in promoting civic volunteerism make a difference in teaching these young men the value of giving back. Often, the value of the event isn't understood by the young men until they complete it and see how rewarding it is. Jeff's role in assisting them in getting started makes him perfect for this award in my opinion."
Among the events that Richter organized was a team head shaving for St. Baldrick's, which raised over $3,000 for childhood cancer research. The team also cleaned up parks and served as volunteer coaches for a youth league.
"The players and coaches consistently attempt to give back to the community in meaningful ways," said head coach Greg Breitbach. "Jeff is in charge of assisting in the organization and execution of many of these events. He continues to find new ways for our team to be involved with the community."
The awards will be presented on April 28 in the Student Memorial Center's multi-purpose room (MPR). The awards program begins at 5:30 p.m. with a receptions in the SMC Atrium. The awards ceremony begins at 7 p.m. The evening includes food, musical entertainment and a photo booth. All are welcome to attend to support the award winners. Please RSVP to kristi.lewis@millersville.edu by April 20.
