McDade Masterful, Stoltzfus Slams as Marauders Take Two From Kutztown

Kutztown, Pa. - It's tough to take a series from Millersville baseball. Kutztown found that out on Saturday. The Golden Bears won game two of the series at Cooper Park by a 5-1 score, but Millersville responded by drilling the hosts by scores of 15-1 and 4-0 on Saturday. After Dan Stoltzfus drove in six runs in game three of the series, Jim McDade nearly tossed a no-hitter, facing the minimum in a complete game, one-hitter.
The game one victory was the Marauders' 30th of the season, giving them 30-plus wins in three consecutive seasons for the first time in program history. The Marauders have also won or split 23 consecutive PSAC Eastern Division series dating back to March of 2012. Millersville has lost only one of 31 PSAC East series since the start of the 2011 season. Millersville also clinched a PSAC Tournament berth for the fifth consecutive season.
Millersville scratched across just one run on four hits in Friday's game two. The response was impressive. The Marauders banged out 28 hits in Saturday's twinbill while Kutztown managed just five. The visitors also produced eight extra base hits including homers from Dan Stoltzfus and John Brogan.
Stoltzfus went 4-for-7 with eight RBIs on the day. His six-RBI opener and two more in the nightcap pushed his season total to 55, which moved him ahead of Millersville hall of famer Ryan Brink's 51 (1998) for second place on the program's single season list. His ninth homer also gave him sole possession of fifth place. He has at least one RBI in 17 of his last 20 games, totaling 38 in that stretch.
The pitching from Miller and McDade was outstanding. Miller allowed only four hits and walked one in six innings of work. The win was his ninth in a row and built his season record to 9-1. It also tied him for the PSAC lead in wins with teammate Chris Murphy. McDade was perfect through the first four innings of the finale. Matt Armour singled to start the fifth but was immediately retired on a 4-6-3 double play. McDade sat down the next seven batters and struck out the last four. He finished with career-high six strikeouts and did not walk a single batter for the sixth consecutive start--a stretch of 37.1 innings.
The Marauders jumped on Kutztown starter Dave King early in the opener, scoring 10 runs on nine hits in the first two innings. Tyler Orris and David Summerfield started the game with back-to-back singles and Stoltzfus brought them both home with a three-run homer to left field. Mitch Stoltzfus hit a two-out double and Tyler McDonald drove him in with a single, capping a four-run first.
Six more runs crossed in the second inning. Stoltzfus drove in three with a bases-clearing double. McDonald, Kurt Seiders and Chas McCormick also picked up RBIs in the inning. Millersville piled up some more runs late. McCormick ripped a RBI double in the fifth. Orris and Summerfield plated runs in the sixth, and Brogan, who came off the bench for Stoltzfus, hit a homer of his own in the seventh. Orris went 3-for-6, reached base four times and scored two runs.
With McDade keeping Golden Bears off the base paths, Millersville was able to manufacture a run in the first. McCormick drew a two-out walk, stole second base and then scored on a Stoltzfus RBI single. The 1-0 lead remained until the fourth when the Marauders scored two more. McDonald led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Neff tripled him home and Orris singled up the middle to plate Neff.
Orris recorded his fifth hit of the day to start the sixth and scored for the third time when Stoltzfus singled him home. Seven of the nine Marauders in the lineup recorded at least one hit. Orris, Summerfield, Stoltzfus, McDonald and Neff all recorded two apiece.
Millersville hosts Philadelphia for a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday and then welcomes USciences to The Coop on Thursday, April 23. The PSAC East schedule closes on April 24-25 with a four-game series against Mansfield.
