Spring Break WrapupThe Millersville softball team enters this weekend with an overall record of 8-7 and all 15 of those games were played at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida. During the Spring break trip, it was a bit of an up and down journey for the Marauders who never won or lost more than two games in a row. NIne of the contests were decided by three runs or less and in those games, Millersville went 4-5. Pitching has carried the Marauders to those eight overall wins but the hitting hasn't found its stride yet, which is talked about more below.
Freshman PhenomSo far in 2015, Cassidy Pinchorski has proven why her list of accomplishments at Williams Valley HIgh School was so lengthy. The freshman hurler is among the PSAC's best in several statistical categories including complete games (first/seven), strikeouts (second/35), innings pitched (T-2nd/48.1), wins (T-2nd/four), opponent's batting average (fourth/.192), and earned run average (eighth/1.45). The Tower City, Pa., native is also third in the conference and 38th in the nation in hits allowed per seven innings (4.8) while her ERA is good for 47th in the country. Because of Pinchorski's efforts, Millersville is sixth in the league in team ERA at 2.41.DiFilippo Doing Her ThingLast season, Danielle DiFilippo was second on the team in batting average with a clip of .347. This season has seen nothing different as the senior is hitting .419 to put her career average over the .300 mark at .302. The second baseman is second in the PSAC in sacrifice hits (five), tied for fifth in hits (18), tied for fifth in triples (two), tied for sixth in total bases (28), and tied for ninth in RBI's (10). This season, DiFilippo has registered multiple hits in four different games and for her career, she is up to a remarkable 33 sacrifice hits. When shortstop Jordan Sheffield gets on from the leadoff spot, look for DiFilippo to move her over.Hitting WoesWith how good Marauder pitchers have been in the circle, hitting has not held up its end of the bargain. So far this season, Millersville is hitting just .249 as a team, has been shutout four times and held to two runs in five different games. Enter West Chester and Kutztown who are both handling their business at the plate so far this Spring.Scouting the Golden BearsKutztown comes in having won two straight and four of its last five. The Golden Bears also come off a pair of routs and they came against Goldey-Beacom to the tune of 9-1 in six innings and 11-1, also in six innings. Kutztown isn't hitting nearly as well as West Chester but has managed to hit .273 led by a pair of hitters over the .300 mark in Asja Saito and Blayse Cholish. Saito is hitting .359 with 14 hits in 39 at-bats while Cholish has hit .300 (15-for-50). Savannah Nierintz has thrown 53.2 innings with a miniscule 1.04 ERA, 37 strikeouts and only 13 walks while opponents are hitting just .235 against her.Scouting the Golden RamsThe Golden Rams are coming off a two-game home sweep of Mansfield in which they outscored the Mountaineers by a combined score of 26-1. As a team, West Chester is hitting .329, which is third in the PSAC and the Golden Rams have played more games than anyone else in the conference. This season, West Chester has scored at least eight runs eight times and at least 10 runs four times. Pacing the offense has been senior catcher, Erin Whitman who is hitting .448 with 26 hits in her 58 at-bats, seven doubles, four triples, one home run, 20 RBI's, and only one strikeout. In the circle, the Golden Rams are led by rookie Amanda Houck who has an ERA of 1.81 through 46 and a third innings pitched. Hitters are hitting .238 against the southpaw.
