Murphy Sets Career Wins Record as Marauders Split with West Chester

West Chester, Pa. - Chris Murphy became Millersville's career wins leader with a classic Chris Murphy performance: a seven-inning, complete game shutout, with 10 strikeouts, one hit and no walks allowed. Murphy's 26th career win came by a 6-0 score on PSAC East rival West Chester's home field. The Golden Rams foiled Millersville's sweep attempt with a come-from-behind, 5-4 wak-off win in game two.
Murphy improved to 26-4 in 33 career starts--15 of which have ended with a complete game. That 15th complete game also tied Jay Dimler's school record that was set in 1988. Murphy, now 5-0, is just five starts into his third season with Millersville. By comparison, previous record holder Tad Barton, who set the mark with a 25-11 record, made 49 appearances and 37 starts in his four-year career. He also improved to 12-1 against PSAC East opponents and 3-0 against West Chester.
With Murphy tossing a gem, the Marauder bats used the long ball. Tyler McDonald hit a two-run blast in the sixth to break a scoreless tie. Then, in the same inning, Millersville loaded the bases on a single from Tyler Orris, a hit by pitch on Chas McCormick and a Dan Stoltzfus walk, John Brogan followed with a grand slam--the first homer of his career.
Brogan finished the game with two hits, and David Summerfield pushed his hitting streak to 14 games with two hits and also reached on a walk. West Chester starter Eric Close gave up no runs on two hits and four walks in four innings. All of Millersville's runs were scored against reliever Joe Gutowski (1-1).
After West Chester's bullpen took the loss in the opener, Millersville's bullpen gave up a two-run lead with three runs allowed in the final two innings. Millersville scored in the first inning on a Dan Stoltzfus RBI single. After West Chester took the lead with runs in the third and fourth innings, Millersville retied it at 2-2 when Mitch Stoltzfus squeezed in McCormick. Dan pushed his in second and third runs of the game in the top of the sixth with a two-run double, which gave the Marauders a 4-2 lead.
But the lead wouldn't last. Marauder starter Dylan Boisclair gave up two runs on five hits and three walks in four innings, and Logan Grant navigated through the fifth without allowing a run. In the sixth, however, Sean Stephenson, who handed allowed a run in his first 7.1 innings this season, was tagged for two runs on three hits. Millersville's lineup could not break the 4-4 tie in the top of the seventh, but West Chester did. The first three batters of the inning reached against Jesse Mowen. Matt Binder entered with the bases loaded and no outs and walked in Joey Coyle. It was the first loss credited to the Millersville bullpen this season.
Orris and Dan Stoltzfus both had two hits. Summerfield's hitting streak finally came to an end after going 0-for-4.
With Cooper Park not in playable condition, Millersville returns to West Chester on Wednesday to complete the four-game series. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. Millersville's regularly scheduled non-conference game at Wilmington will be rescheduled for later in the season.
