Complete Game Notes (.PDF)GAME OVERVIEW• After a week away from the court for finals in the classroom, Millersville returns for a pair of PSAC Eastern Division road games at Lock Haven and Cheyney. These are Millersville's only two games in a 26-day span from Dec. 5 to Dec. 31. Prior to the break, Millersville started playing its best basketball of the season, defeating three consecutive teams with winning records before pushing then-No. 12 California to the final possession. After allowing 41.7 percent shooting and 69.0 points per game in the 1-3 start, Millersville has allowed just 58.8 points per game and 35.4 percent shooting. The Marauders also out-rebounded teams 43.8-33.8 in the recent 3-1 run.
• Millersville remains in search of its first road win, starting 0-3. The Marauders are averaged 60.3 points, allowed 67.7 and allowed 44.7 percent shooting in its first three road games. Only
Shelby Reimer (13.7) and
Celeste Robinson (11.0) average double figures on the road, and Robinson's average is down 6.2 points from her home average.
•
Aunjel Van Brakle has elevated her play of late, scoring in double figures in five consecutive games and in six of eight games this season. Van Brakle played just 32 total minutes in the first two games of the season but has since played 30-plus in five of six. She's averaged 14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds while shooting 44.6 percent from the field and 79.2 percent from the line over the last five games.
• Rebounding is key for Millersville, which now ranks fifth in the league in rebounding margin (+4.8) and fourth in offensive rebounds. Millersville is 4-1 when winning the second-chance points battle and is 4-0 when scoring 16 or more second-chance points. Millersville holds a 102-80 edge in second-chance points this season.
• Millersville had won seven in a row and 40 of 41 over Cheyney until Kyle Adams became the Wolves' head coach. Adams is now 3-1 against the Marauders including two wins last season. Both of those games came by a total of 11 points. Cheyney's last three wins have been by a total of 12 points. Now on a two-game skid against the Wolves, Millersville last lost two consecutive games to Cheyney in 1990-91 and has not lost three in a row since dropping six in a row from 1981-1986.
• Lock Haven hosts Kutztown before welcoming Millersville Millersville on Saturday, but entering the week, the Bald Eagles have won three of four and are 3-1 at home this season. The Bald Eagles are in the midst of a six-game home stand. Millersville will play in the finale of the home stand. Millersville had won nine in a row in the series and 21 of 23 until 2015 when the Bald Eagles took advantage of a Marauder team without
Carly Gallagher and
Celeste Robinson and picked up two close wins. Both of Lock Haven's wins came by a total of seven points. It was the first wins for Coach Jen Smith over her former coach in 10 tries. Smith, a 2002 Millersville grad, ranks eighth all-time in 3-pointers made, third in field goal percentage and 16th in career assists. She was an All-PSAC East Second Team pick in 2001-02.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT• Cheyney has won two in a row after opening the season with seven consecutive losses. The Wolves picked up a three-point win at home against Virginia State and then won 60-59 over Wilmington on the road. The Wolves struggle to score, averaging a league-worst 57.6 points per game, shooting 34.5 percent (17th). They actually shoot a better percentage from three (35.9) than from two. Three players average in double figures. Aerie DeJesus and TaKayla Ellis are capable 3-point shooters, both hitting at a 37 percent clip.
• Lock Haven struggles with its offensive efficiency, ranking 15th in the PSAC in field goal percentage, 16th in turnover margin and 16th in assist/turnover ratio. The Bald Eagles make up for that on the glass, ranking second in the PSAC in rebounds per game (42.6) and second in offensive rebounds (16.0). The Bald Eagles' 7.7 rebound margin is best in the league. Lysa Mealing (12.1 per game) is the No. 2 rebounder in the PSAC.
