Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville women's cross country team has their sights set high for the 2015 PSAC Championship on Saturday, Oct. 24 in Slippery Rock, Pa. The last time this annual event took place at Slippery Rock was in 2012 when Millersville completed the meet in 13th of 15 teams. Millersville finished 13th in the 17-team field last season.
The Marauders scored a top-10 finish this past weekend at the Gettysburg Invitational (10th/26). Achieving strong team finishes have been a challenge for Millersville the season because of injuries and depth. Five out of the Marauder's 10 competitors this season are true freshman.
"They are a positive group. They want to get better every week," said Coach Andy Young, who is in his 10th season as head cross country coach. "Although we were struggling with fitness much of the season they have made a commitment to improving and enjoying the process. I think practice is something many of them look forward too."
The Marauders have been led this season by newcomer Natalie Crum who finished within the top 37 during every meet this season, setting her 6K personal best at the Lock Haven Invitational with a time of 23:19.41. Crum is expected to finish among the top during the PSAC Women's Cross Country Championship this weekend.
"Mentally, I'm just staying relaxed and trying not to focus too hard on it," said Crum. "This is my first season, and I am not entirely sure what to expect. All I want is to be able to smile at my parents, my teammates, and my coach after the race and say that I did my best and that I did it for them and with thanks to them. And that's the thought I'm carrying with me going into PSAC Championship."
Seasoned runner Shannon Cruz returned to the course this past weekend after an injury that prevented her from competing the majority of the season. During her first meet Cruz finished in 73rd with a time of 24:53.01. Cruz finished 22nd at the PSAC Championship last season earning All-PSAC Second Team honors. Also familiar with the PSAC turf is Abigail Daley. Daley set her personal best 6K time (22:55.50) last season at the PSAC Championship where she finished in 30th.
Last season, Edinboro took the first-place spot in the PSAC Women's Cross Country Championship for the first time since their nine-year winning streak ended in 2006. This year's roster is stocked with experienced runners including eighth-place finisher in last season's PSAC Championship Anna Hösl who finished with a time of 22:07.60. Hösl also finished among the top during the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championship where she came in 12th.
The championship race is set to begin at 10 a.m. in Slippery Rock, Pa.
