Box Score Millersville, Pa. - Twenty days after the first 85 minutes of play,
Courtney Weaver scored a double-overtime, game-winner to lift Millersville field hockey past Indiana (Pa.), 2-1. The win preserved Millersville's undefeated record at 9-0 and tied the program record for best start to a season.
The game initially began on Sept. 12 and was postponed at the start of the second overtime because of unplayable field conditions and heavy rain. At the time the game started, Millersville was 3-0 and ranked No. 3 in Division II. When it resumed, the Marauders were the No. 1-ranked team and 8-0. The teams picked up where the left off in more ways than one as heavy rained pounded the turf throughout warm-ups and into the start of play.
The Marauders needed only 4:44 to put an end to the game.
Arianna Grays pushed the ball into the circle and drew a penalty corner.
Lauren Gerhart inserted to
Olivia Hershey to the right of goalkeeper Olivia Accardi. Hershey's evaded an oncoming defender and smoothly passed to Weaver. With her back to the goal, Weaver received the pass, turned and fired low past Accardi's left leg. The goal was Weaver's first of the season.
Millersville went with
Samantha Rumler in goal after
Kylee Bair started the game in September. Rumler had started the previous three games for Millersville. Rumler received the decision, improving to 4-0.
Back on Sept. 12, the game reached overtime only because
Kathleen Bishop redirected a
Megan Donlan shot out of the air with just 1:45 left in regulation. Millersville trailed for nearly 58 minutes after Brittany Thornton scored the game's first goal in the 10th minute.
The Marauders concluded the game with 15-3 edge in shots and a 15-2 advantage in penalty corners. IUP's lone shot on goal was Thornton's goal.
The Marauders have a busy weekend at home, following Friday's game by hosting Seton Hill on Saturday and Newberry on Sunday.
