West Chester, Pa. - Millersville sophomore Jaimie Wharton finished a tie for eighth at the two-day Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invitational, leading the Marauder women's golfers to a seventh-place finish.
Wharton opened the tournament with a 13-over-par 83, putting her just three shots out of the lead. Tuesday's unfavorable weather made scoring difficult for the entire field. Only five of the top-20 finishers posted lower scores in the second round. Wharton battled to a 20-over-par 90 on Tuesday, but she still managed fifth top-10 finish in seven events this season.
As a team, the Marauders finished with a 760 total and one spot in front of East Stroudsburg. Merrimack took the team crown with a 681 total.
Freshman Danielle Freed improved upon her opening round 91 with an 89 on Tuesday. Her 180 36-hole total was the best of her young Marauder career. She finished in a tie for 21st place. Sophomore Kendal Olear went eight shots lower in round two with a 94. She placed in 32nd. Cara Geiger (42nd) and Allison Wray (43rd) also competed for the Marauders.
Millersville plays in the Ursinus College Invitational on April 15 at Stonewall North Course in Collegeville, Pa.
