West Chester, Pa. - Led by Robby Rowe and Conor Gilbert, the Millersville men's golfers shot the best team score of Tuesday's final round at the Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invitational. The charge was still not enough for the defending champion Marauders after a difficult first round pushed the them to the back of the pack.
Millersville's 321 in the opening round buried it in seventh out of nine teams and 30 shots out of the lead set by Indiana (Pa.). Millersville rallied with a 306 in the second round but moved only one spot up the team leaderboard into sixth. West Chester matched Millersville's second round score and finished third. IUP and California (Pa.) shot identical 308 scores on day two, and IUP won with a two-day total of 599.
The cold temperatures and steady rain made scoring conditions difficult on the par 70 Penn Oaks Golf Club track, but Rowe and medalist Jordan Eck of California fired Tuesday's best score at 2-over-par. Rowe, who opened with a 79, finished at 11-over-par and in sixth place, extending his streak of consecutive top-10 finishes to seven. Gilbert posted a 6-over-par 76 in the opening round and closed the tournament with a 77 to finish in a three-way tie for eighth. Gilbert has now finished in the top-10 in seven of eight tournaments. Eck pulled away from the field with a 3-over-par 143 total.
Coming off a first-place finish at the Goldey-Beacom Invitational, senior Jonathon Heile posted rounds of 79 and 78 to finish in a tie for 21st. Matt Lutz improved his day one score by three shots but placed 48th. Kevin Davis turned his play around on day two. After posting the highest score of his career in the opening round, he shot a 9-over-par 79 on Tuesday.
Robert Coyne, who won the tournament in 2013, did not count toward the team score but finished in 32nd at 21-over-par.
The Marauders next compete in the Cecil C. Spadafora Invitational hosted by IUP on April 13-14.
