Box Score 2 Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville softball team defeated Mansfield 2-0 in game one thanks to a two-run home run from
Jordan Sheffield but was blanked in game two by a score of 4-0 for a series' split.
The Marauders (15-13, 5-5 PSAC East) were led by Sheffield and another dominant start from
Brianna Andraos in game one while the Mountaineers (12-6, 4-4 PSAC East) leaned on Emily Crandell for a terrific outing in the second contest. This series marked the first meeting between the teams as members of the PSAC East. Prior to this season, Millersville was a member of the Eastern Division while Mansfield played in the Central Division.
GAME ONE RECAPBefore Sheffield's home run, the Mountaineers and Marauders had a total of four runners in scoring position but neither team could push through. In the bottom of the third,
Taylor Odell-Smith reached on a one-out single and Sheffield brought her home with a two-run bomb off the scoreboard behind the left-field fence. That marked the third round-tripper of the season for the Oxford, Pa. native and she leads the PSAC in runs scored with 27.
In the circle, Andraos (10-6) reccorded her fifth shutout of the season with five hits allowed, four strikeouts and a walk. The sophomore hurler is now just one win shy of her total from all of last season. Mansfield had plenty of chances to tie or take the lead as they stranded seven runners on the game.
At the plate, the Marauders had just five hits with each one coming from a different batter.
GAME TWO RECAPGame two was scoreless through the first six frames as both Andraos and Crandell were in complete comand on the rubber. However, the Mountaineers broke through with four runs in the top of the seventh and that is where the score ended up.
Hannah Secord led off the inning with a single before the next batter struck out but Secord moved to second because of a passed ball. Stephanie Simmeth then came up and singled to left field to bring in Secord. After a base-knock from Courtney Bauder put runners on first and second, a much-debated call was coming with Kate Pratt at the dish. Pratt proceeded to hit a grounder to Sheffield at shortstop who went for the force at third and Simmeth was initially called out. However, the umpires had a conference and reversed the call. Mansfield then tacked on three more runs with an RBI groundout and a two-run double to go up four runs. Had that call not been reversed, the margin would have been only one run with the third out coming on the groundout from Amanda Goodwin.
Millersville was unable to get on the board even though it had seven hits. The Marauders stranded six baserunners including five in scoring position in the day's rematch.
Andraos took the loss after throwing seven innings and gave up four earned runs on eight hits while striking out five batters and walking two. Crandell (5-3) pitched a shutout with four punchouts and one walk. The only Marauders with multiple hits were
Stephanie Kulp (2-for-3) and
Mandy Hammond (2-for-3). Both of Hammond's hits were bunt singles and she is third in the conference in batting average at .489.
Millersville is at No. 16 Shippensburg on Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
