Stone Makes History as Marauders Complete Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Mansfield, Pa. - Monday belonged to Zach Stone. Hours after being named the PSAC East Player of the Week, Stone moved to the top of the Millersville record books as the career leader in hits and RBIs. His 5-for-7, four-RBI performance in the doubleheader propelled the Marauders to a series sweep of Mansfield by scores of 13-3 and 5-3.

With Stone leading the offensive charge, No. 26 Millersville (31-12, 18-6 PSAC East) moved past Bloomsburg into first place in the PSAC East with a four-game series against West Chester remaining. The Marauders also clinched their fourth consecutive PSAC Tournament berth, making Stone and his fellow seniors the first class with four postseason appearances.

Millersville, now winners of five in a row, banged out 25 hits against Mansfield, including 15 in the opener. The 13 runs scored in game one were the second-most scored by the Marauders all season and most totaled against a PSAC East opponent since April 15, 2011 when they scored 13 against Shippensburg. It was business as usual for the pitching staff, which held its opponent to three runs or fewer for the 30th time in 43 games. Chris Murphy (8-2) allowed just one run on four hits and struck out five in six innings for the game one win. Brandon Miller took a no decision in game two after striking out five and allowing three runs through four. The bullpen did the rest as Matt Binder and Adam Zipko (4-0) combined for three scoreless innings.

As steady as the Marauder pitchers continued to perform, Stone continued to hit at an uncanny rate. He extended his hitting streak to nine games and recorded two or more hits for the fourth and fifth consecutive games. Stone is 18-for-30 in his current streak and an incredible 14 for his last 18. Stone, who played with former record holder Derek Kline on the 2011 NCAA Atlantic Region Championship team, moved into the top spot in RBIs with a two-run single in the fifth inning of the opener. His record-tying 247th hit came in the first inning of game two, and he surpassed his former teammate with another single in the fifth. Stone delivered another RBI and hit with a run-scoring double in the seventh, which provided Millersville with a much-needed insurance run and a 5-3 lead. He closed his day with 150 RBIs and 249 hits--now two ahead of Kline in both categories.

Stone wasn't the only Marauder to have a big day at the plate. Dan Stoltzfus went 4-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs in game one and went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a stolen base in game two. Tyler Orris went 5-for-8 with four runs, two steals and broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning of game two with a RBI double. Chas McCormick totaled four hits and four runs. He hit back-to-back doubles in his final two at bats of game one.

Millersville plays its final home games on Friday, April 25 against West Chester. First pitch for the doubleheader is 1 p.m.

GAME ONE RECAP
Millersville threatened early and often in the opener but stranded a pair of runners in each of the first two innings. The Marauder lineup broke through in the third with RBI singles from Alex Ramsay and Stoltzfus. The floodgates opened in the fourth when five runs crossed on five hits. Stoltzfus plated two with his first homer of the season. Stone drove in Mark Stuckey and Chas McCormick in the fifth for his record-setting RBIs, and the Marauders piled up four more runs on four hits and two walks in the seventh.

Murphy breezed through the first three innings, allowing just one double. One run scored in the fourth after he gave up a leadoff single. Murphy retired eight in a row before handing the ball to the bullpen. Mansfield added a pair of too-little-too-late runs in the seventh.

Seven different Marauders scored at least one run and every starter reached base at least once.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Marauders jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth when Tyler McDonald drove in Orris with a single, and Stoltzfus plated Ramsay and McDonald with a double. The lead disappeared in a hurry, though, as Mansfield's Westin Baylor smacked a three-run bomb in the bottom of the inning to tie it.

The Marauders saw opportunities slip away in the fifth and sixth. Stuckey singled, Orris walked and Stone singled to load the bases with one out, but the Marauders could not score. In the sixth, the first two Marauders reached base, and they put runners on the corners with no outs but again failed to break the 3-3 tie.

Fortunately for the Marauders, the bullpen locked up the Mansfield hitters for three innings. Binder retired all three batters he faced in the fifth, and Zipko worked a scoreless sixth, giving the Marauders a chance to take the lead in the seventh. They did just that when McCormick led off with a single and Orris followed with a RBI double. Stone repeated Orris' feat to give the Marauders a two-run cushion.

After Zipko retired the first two batters of the seventh, Mansfield made it interesting. Owen Lukens singled and Taylor Hillson walked to put the winning run at the dish. Zipko, however, forced Seth Tressler to fly out to end the game.
