Millersville Softball Sweeps Kutztown in Road Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kutztown, Pa. - The road hasn't been too kind to the Millersville softball team this season but there were no signs of that trouble on Thursday when the Marauders swept Kutztown with scores of 2-0 and 5-3.

Millersville (20-20, 8-12 PSAC East) has now won four consecutive games and took three of four against the Golden Bears (14-23, 6-12, PSAC East) this season while the defending national runners-up have lost six straight and seven of their last eight games.

GAME ONE RECAP
In game one, neither team scored until the fourth inning when the Marauders were able to push across two runs. Heather Lutz opened the frame with a walk on four straight pitches but was retired at second on a fielder's choice from Maria Spinosa. After a Brittany Smith walk, both runners moved up a base thanks to Ashley Cantiello's one-out groundout. Stephanie Kulp then smacked a double to center that brought in both Spinosa and Smith. After going hitless in seven consecutive games from April 6-13, the junior is 6-of-11 (.545) in her last four games.

In the circle, two runs was just enough for sophomore hurler, Brianna Andraos (13-10). The right-hander earned her 19th complete game and seventh shutout of the season, both of which are first among pitchers in the PSAC. Andraos gave up no runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Danielle DiFilippo was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and bumped her batting average up to a scorching .359. Cantiello had two hits in her three at-bats while Kulp was 1-of-3 in the No. nine spot with the two runs batted in.

GAME TWO RECAP
Amanda Wink (4-8) struggled early on by walking two batters and hitting another in the bottom of the first, but got out of the bases-loaded jam. In the second, the first batter reached on an error and two outs later scored when another Golden Bear reached by way of an error.

In the top of the third, Kulp continued her hot hitting with a no-doubter over the fence in left, her third homer of the season and eighth of her career. One out later, Jordan Sheffield singled and came around to score on a DiFilippo two-bagger. Millersville then extended its lead to 3-1 when Lutz hit her 15th double of the season and brought in DiFilippo.

The home team tied the score up at 3-3 in the sixth with back-to-back RBI singles, but the Marauders didn't go away. In the top of the seventh, DiFilippo was intentionally walked to load up the bases for Gabbie Berry. Berry made Kutztown pay and singled back up the middle to score Sheffield and Mandy Hammond and Millersville regained its lead 5-3 as it was in the final score.

The Golden Bears stranded 12 runners in game two and left the bases loaded in both the first and sixth innings. Kutztown was just 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Wink gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits with three punchouts and three free passes. At the dish, the Marauders' top four hitters in the lineup hit a combined 7-of-15 (.467) while Sheffield, DiFilippo and Berry each had two hits apiece. Kulp had two hits in her three at-bats with a run scored and an RBI. DiFilippo had five hits in her six at-bats for the doubleheader sweep.

The Marauders are at home on Friday against West Chester beginning at 2:30 p.m. for Military Appreciation Day at Millersville Softball Field.
