Millersville's Bats Come Alive in Sweep of Goldey-Beacom

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Millersville, Pa. - Millersville softball snapped a four-game skid on Monday afternon by defeating Goldey-Beacom in both games, 10-2.

The Marauders (18-20) scored double-figure runs in both games of a twinbill for the first time this season and hadn't done so since April 4, 2013 against Lincoln (Pa.). Millersville improved to 13-6 all-time against the Lightning and have taken four of the last five in the series. Goldey-Beacom (7-24) has lost four straight and fell to 3-14 in "true" road games.

GAME ONE RECAP
Gabbie Berry started the party with an RBI single that scored Jordan Sheffield in the bottom of the first. The visitors tied things up at 1-1 in the top of the third but in the bottom of that inning, the Marauders reclaimed the lead.

Heather Lutz singled home Danielle DiFilippo and an RBI triple by Brittany Smith pushed Maria Spinosa across the plate giving Millersville a 3-1 advantage. Smith is now tied for second in the conference in triples with three and no Marauder has hit more than two triples in a season since 2011.

In the bottom of the fourth, Stephanie Kulp laced a solo home run over the fence in left for her second round-tripper of the season and the Black and Gold were up 4-1. The Lightning cut the deficit to two in the fifth but Millersville's bats continued to exert themselves.

In the fifth, An RBI double from Spinosa brought in Lutz and Spinosa later scored when Smith reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. One out later, Kulp reached on an error by the pitcher allowing Smith to come in and score. After a wild pitch and a groundout, Sheffield brought in Kulp with an RBI double to give the Marauders an 8-2 advantage.

Gab Ceritano pinch hit for Berry in the bottom of the sixth and led off the frame with a double. After she advanced to second on a wild pitch, Mandy Hammond laid down a bunt on the suicide squeeze and Ceritano scored. Spinosa then hit a base-knock to put runners on first and second. When Hammond tried to steal third, the third baseman committed an error on the throw down, Hammond scored and Millersville won with the mercy rule.

Brianna Andraos (12-10) threw six innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on seven hits with three walks and one strikeout. Lutz and Spinosa both tallied two hits apiece.

GAME TWO RECAP
In the second game, Goldey-Beacom scored two with a two-run single before the Marauder lineup had even seen a pitch. However, the Lightning wouldn't score again. In the bottom of the first, Berry hit an RBI double and Lutz followed with an RBI single to tie the game up at 2-2.

Two innings later, a two-run double from Smith scored Spinosa and Lutz before Ashley Cantiello brought home Smith with a base-knock of her own.

In the fifth, Smith doubled in Spinosa and Sheffield drew a bases-loaded walk to push Smith across.

Cantiello had an RBI single and Kulp had an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to give Millersville a 9-2 lead once again. Taylor Odell-Smith then pinch hit for Hammond and gave the Marauders another mercy-rule win with an RBI single.

Amanda Wink (3-8) won her first game since March 27 against Bowie State with six innings pitched and two earned runs allowed on five hits. Millersville's 4-8 hitters each had at least two hits and were a combined 12-of-18 in the batter's box. Smith and Cantiello led the offensive onslaught with three hits apiece.

The Marauders will travel to Kutztown on Thursday for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
