Wayne, Pa. - The Millersville women's golf team started its spring campaign on top. Even without senior Amber Rohrer in the lineup, the Marauders won Tuesday's Eastern University Invitational at St. David's Golf Club.
The team's tournament victory is Millersville's third of the 2013-14 season. It bested East Stroudsburg and host Eastern by five shots with a 388 total. Freshman Danielle Freed challenged for medalist honors, shooting a 19-over-par 89. She came within one shot of the lead, which was set by Neumann's Lauren Cusack.
Marauder Jaimie Wharton placed fourth with a 91 and Kendal Olear tied for 12th in the 49-player field with a 97. Cara Geiger rounded out Millersville's finishers in a tie for 28th.
The women's golf program is in its fifth season of existence and has now won three of the six tournaments it has played in this season. Wharton has placed fourth or better in four of six tournaments. Freed now has one win and one runner-up finish. Geiger's 28th-place finish was the best of her career.
Millersville travels to Berkleigh Golf Club for the one-day Kutztown Spring Invitational on April 5.
