
Men's Golf Edges West Chester for First; Heile Takes Medalist Honors

led a Millersville charge to the top of the Goldey-Beacom Spring Invitational leaderboard on Tuesday. Heile's even-par round helped the Marauders edge rival West Chester by one shot for the team crown and landed him his first career individual championship.
Heile's 70 matched the lowest total to par in his career, and after 22 career events and four career top-10 finishes, he won his first tournament. He trailed teammate and leader Kevin Davis by five shots after the opening round and held off a challenge from West Chester's Zachary Boe and Michael Ashcraft, who both finished one shot behind in a tie for second.
Every stroke was vital to the team standings as Millersville's 298 total was a 19-shot improvement from the previous round and three shots better than West Chester's second round score. The win is the second team title for the Marauders this season and the seventh since March of 2012. Millersville has finished second or first in four of nine eents this season and in 10 of its last 26 tournaments. Head coach Scott Vandegrift has now won 54 tournaments since 1987.
Robby Rowe improved upon his day one total of 81 by shooting a 3-over-par 73 in the second round and tying with Davis for fourth. Davis shot a 78 in round two. Rowe has now finished in the top 10 in six consecutive tournaments and in seven of his last eight. Conor Gilbert captured his sixth top-10 finish in seven events by placing seventh at 16-over-par.
Senior Chris Fieger tied for 17th. Four other Marauders participated as individuals. Matt Lutz took ninth, Robert Coyne placed in a tie for 12th, freshman Nathan Hertzog placed in a tie for 14th after shooting a career-low 3-over-par 73 in the second round. Tyler Marcotte landed in a tie for 25th.
Millersville next competes in the Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invitational on April 5-6 at Penn Oaks Golf Club in West Chester. Millersville is the defending champion of the tournament and a Marauder golfer has won medalist honors in each of the previous two years.
