Johnson's Clutch Hitting Drives Marauders to Split with Kutztown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kutztown, Pa. - After a narrow 3-2 loss in Tuesday's doubleheader opener with Kutztown, Millersville used three hits and four RBIs from senior Dan Johnson for a 7-2 victory in game two.

Millersville (19-8, 6-2 PSAC East) totaled 13 hits in the nightcap while starter Jim McDade held Kutztown (12-7, 2-4 PSAC East) to just three hits and a walk and improved to 3-0.  Along with Johnson, Tyler Orris also went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Chas McCormick singled, walked twice and scored twice. Kurt Seiders went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run.

The offensive outburst in game two was a stark contrast to the performance in game one. Millersville managed just five hits and drew no walks against Brandon Shimo. Tad Barton (3-2) allowed two earned runs--three total--on eight hits in six innings. Kutztown's sixth inning score kept his career wins total at 22 and denied him the solo spot atop the Marauder record books.

Kutztown struck first in the opener by putting the first three batters on base with a single, hit by pitch and walk. One run came home on a throwing error and a second crossed on a single. Dan Neff provided Millersville's equalizer in the second with a RBI double that plated Johnson and Tyler McDonald. The Marauders, however, never seriously threatened the rest of the way.

Barton settled in after a rocky first two innings, but in the sixth, Kutztown received a pinch hit single to start the inning. A wild pitch advanced the runner to second and with two outs, Brandon Hickey delivered a pinch hit, go-ahead RBI single.

Millersville scored right away in game two. Johnson, who drove in at least one run in each of his first three at bats, plated McCormick with a single. After Kutztown took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second, Johnson tied the game in the third with a single that scored Orris. Orris untied the game in the fourth with a RBI single, and Johnson widened the gap with a bases loaded double that drove in two.

Seiders added to the advantage in the seventh with a RBI single, and Neff, who reached base on a single, came home on a Kutztown error.

McDade's work came to a close in the sixth inning, giving him three consecutive starts with six innings of work and no more than two runs allowed. Adam Zipko pitched a perfect seventh.

Millersville returns to Cooper Park on Friday for a PSAC East doubleheader with Bloomsburg. First pitch is 1 pm.
