Millersville Sweeps Bowie State in Non-Conference Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Millersville, Pa. – Back on March 15, Millersville softball rolled past Bowie State by a score of 9-1 in six innings and that trend continued Thursday as the Marauders took both games by scores of 13-0 (5 innings) and 8-2.

The Marauders (12-8) have won four straight and in three games against the Bulldogs (4-18) this season, they have outscored Bowie State 30-3 and banged out 37 hits to just 13 from the Bulldogs. Milersville has never lost to Bowie State in the series history (11-0).

GAME ONE RECAP

The Marauders scored eight runs in the second and five more in the third to run away with game one. Brittany Smith got the party started with a leadoff triple and came home on an RBI double from Taylor Odell-Smith. After a single from Maria Spinosa put runners on the corners, Odell-Smith crossed the plate thanks to a bunt single from Mandy Hammond.

Hammond then stole second, Jordan Sheffield reached on an error by the second baseman, Spinosa scored, and both runners moved up with a double steal. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Danielle DiFilippo allowed Hammond to score and Sheffield was brought in with a Gabbie Berry RBI single. After the next two batters reached by way of an error and hit-by-pitch, Smith came up for a second time in the inning and cleared the bases with a three-run double.

In the bottom of the third, Hammond singled and moved to second on an error by the left fielder. A Berry flyout moved her to third and she came in to score when DiFilippo reached on an error by the right fielder. After Ashley Cantiello brought in DiFilippo, a base-knock from Heather Lutz put runners on the corners and Smith tallied her third hit of the day with a double down the left-field line that scored two. An Odell-Smith RBI single put Millersville up 13-0 where the score would stand.

The Marauders tied a season-high with four doubles and stole a season-high three bases. A pair of freshmen in Smith and Hammond was the offensive catalyst as they were both 3-for-3 at the dish and Smith accumulated five RBIs. Odell-Smith had her first two-hit day of the season (2-of-3) to go with a run scored, two RBIs and a double.

In the circle, Stephanie Kulp (1-0) made her first start and appearance of the season. The junior threw four innings of one-hit softball while striking out five batters and walking only one. In relief, Amanda Wink struckout the side in the top of the fifth.

GAME TWO RECAP

In the second contest, Millersville scored in the bottom of the first with an RBI groundout from Smith that pushed DiFilippo across the plate. The very next inning, Spinosa stepped into the box with the bases loaded and cleared the bases with a double before being thrown out at third base. After Sheffield singled and stole second, Berry singled her in.

In the third, with Lutz standing on second, Odell-Smith reached on an error by the pitcher and Lutz came around to score. The next batter, Kulp, gave Millersville a 7-0 advantage with an RBI single.

Bowie State scored its first run of the day with a solo home run in the fourth. The Marauders went up 8-1 in the bottom of that frame when Lutz doubled home Smith. An RBI single from the Bulldogs cut the margin to 8-2 in the sixth before Brianna Andraos shut the door in the seventh.

Lutz led the way with two hits in four at-bats, one run scored and an RBI.

Wink (2-4) tossed 5.2 innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and just one walk. Andraos went 1.1 innings of relief with no runs given up on one hit and two punchouts.

Millersville now embarks on a four-game road trip with a doubleheader at Kutztown on Friday (2:30 p.m.) and West Chester on Saturday (1 p.m.).
