Southport, N.C. - Millersville junior Robby Rowe started his spring season just like he finished his fall, but the Marauder men's golf team struggled to shake off the winter rust and finished ninth in a field of 16 at the weekend's St. James Plantation Invitational.
Rowe fired three sub-80 rounds including a 1-under-par 71 in the second to finish fifth in a field of 104 golfers. The golfers played 36 holes on the first day, and Rowe closed with a 74 on day two, finishing at 7-over-par for the tournament. Rowe finished just two shots out of second place. Louis Kelly of Adelphi ran away with medalist honors after shooting a tournament-low 7-under-par 65 in the first round.
Junior Conor Gilbert was Millersville's No. 2 finisher in 28th place. Gilbert won the final two events of the fall, but shot 8-over-par scores in the first and third rounds. He managed a 2-over-par 73 in the second, and finished 10 shots behind Rowe.
Jonathon Heile tied for 52nd, Kevin Davis placed in a tie for 80th, and Robert Coyne placed in a tie for 95th after posting the highest three-round score of his career. Chris Fieger (T-86th), Nathan Hertzog (89th) and Matt Lutz (T-93rd) competed as individuals.
Adelphi won the team title with Kelly and Dylan Daxon taking first and second place respectively. California (Pa.) placed in a tie for second with St. Thomas Aquinas. All 16 teams in the field were from the Atlantic or East Regions. After winning the PSAC Championship in the fall, Millersville's spot in the regional is already assured.
The Immaculata Invitational scheduled for March 30-31 has been canceled.
