Millersville Drops Two at West Virginia State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Institute, W.V. - Millersville dropped both games of a twinbill to West Virginia State on Friday afternoon by scores of 4-1 and 11-7. Since taking five of six at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament, the Marauders have lost three of their last four games.

In game one, Millersville (8-8) started Brianna Andraos, who gave up more than three runs for the first time all season. The Yellow Jackets (9-9) then scored 11 runs in game two--the most for a Marauder opponent since April 14, 2013 against East Stroudsburg. Millersville committed a total of six errors on the day and of West Virginia State's 15 combined runs, only five were earned for Marauder hurlers.

GAME ONE RECAP
Neither team scored until the Yellow Jackets did so in the bottom of the the third inning. Victoria Crawford opened the frame by reaching on an error by the third baseman and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a single from Sabrina Schouten put runners on the corners, Schouten stole second and on that same play, Gabbie Berry committed an error that allowed both runners to score and the Yellow Jackets were up, 2-0.

The Marauders' lone run came on Stephanie Kulp's first home run of the season, a solo shot to right center in the fifth. West Virginia State added two runs of insurance in the bottom of that inning thanks to an RBI double and a run-scoring fielder's choice.

Kulp led the way with two hits in her four at-bats and Heather Lutz was only other Marauder with multiple hits (2-for-2).

Andraos (5-3) pitched six innings and gave up four runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out one batter and walking two. The Yellow Jackets' Anna Eggleston (9-7) was in the circle for West Virginia State and went the distance after she had gone 0-4 in her previous four starts.

GAME TWO RECAP
Millersville's bats started hot against the Yellow Jackets in game two by putting up four runs in the top of the first. The leadoff batter, Jordan Sheffield was hit by a pitch and advanced to second with the help of a sacrifice bunt from Danielle DiFilippo. After a lineout from Berry, Ashley Cantiello brought in Sheffield with a base knock to left field. Lutz walked to put runners on first and second and then Brittany Smith cleared the bases with her first collegiate home run, a shot to right center.

West Virginia State came right back though and scored two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning and nine more in the second. The Marauders cut the deficit to four, 11-7, with a two-run single from Berry in the fourth and an RBI single off the bat of Kulp in the fifth. However, Millersville didn't cross the plate again and dropped game two by that same score.

Smith was 2-of-4 at the dish with those three RBIs and the run scored on the round-tripper. Four Marauders registered one hit apiece including Berry, Cantiello, Lutz, Kulp, and Brittany Shoemaker.

Cantiello (2-1) received the loss after throwing 1.1 innings and gave up 10 runs, two of which were earned, on five hits with three walks. In relief, Amanda Wink gave up one earned run without recording an out and Andraos went the final four and two-thirds innings and didn't allow a single run on just one hit.

The Marauders will open their home and conference schedules on Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Lock Haven.
