Millersville Knocks Off No. 22 West Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1

Box Score Salem, Va. - No. 22 West Virginia Wesleyan had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the seventh but Millersville escaped with the 2-1 upset win.

The Bobcats (14-5) had won nine of their last 11 but the Marauders (7-5) turned to their ace, Brianna Andraos, and some timely hitting to improve to 3-5 all-time against WVWC. Millersville is on a hot streak right now and has won five of its last six games, all of which have came during the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament.

The Marauders led 2-1 entering the top of the seventh, but West Virginia Wesleyan's Ashley Hurey opened the inning with a single to left field before moving to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Brooklyn Waddell. Alex Furr was next up and hit a sharp grounder back to a diving Maria Spinosa at third but Spinosa's throw over to first wasn't in time and that put runners on the corners.

After Furr stole second, Carleigh Hall singled back to the pitcher, Andraos, to load up the bases. The next batter, Jacqui Omichinski, grounded it right back to Andraos again who threw it home to get the second out. In stepped Megan Malenstyn who hit a routine grounder to Danielle DiFilippo at second who flipped it to Jordan Sheffield covering second base for the final out of the game and a 2-1 Millersville win.

The Marauders scored first in the bottom of the second when Heather Lutz scored on a wild pitch before the Bobcats tied things up at 1-1 in the fifth with an RBI double. Millersville then scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth with a Stephanie Kulp RBI double to center field that brought in Lutz.

Andraos (4-2) tossed a complete game and gave up one earned run on six hits while striking out and walking three batters apiece. The sophomore from Malvern, Pa. has given up no more than one earned run in four of her six appearances in the circle and was nearly impossible to score on during the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament. In three starts there, she had an ERA of just 0.41 in 17 innings pitched (three CG) and gave up just two runs, one earned, on eight hits with 13 strikeouts and 5 walks.

At the plate, both teams had six hits and the Marauder offense was led by Lutz (2-for-3, 2 R) and Kulp (2-of-3, 1 RBI).

Millersville will play three doubleheaders at North Greenville (March 17), Lees-McRae (March 20) and Virginia State (March 21). The Marauders then open both their home and conference schedules on March 23 with a doubleheader against Lock Haven.
