Marauders Go 3-0 on Day Two of West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Salem, Va. - Millersville softball earned the trifecta on day two of the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament with wins over Malone (14-1), Chowan (6-5) and Bowie State (9-1) Those three wins put the Marauders over the .500 mark for the first time this season at 6-5.

Millersville cruised past the Pioneers (7-4-1) with the mercy rule to begin the day thanks to 14 runs on 17 hits, both of which were season-highs. Despite a late rally by the Hawks (4-18) in game two, the Marauders held on for the one-run victory and in the nightcap, Millersville bounced the Bulldogs (1-9) after six innings with nine runs on 13 hits.

GAME ONE RECAP

Brianna Andraos (3-2) has become the ace on the Marauder pitching staff and proved why with her five-inning perfect game Friday against Franklin Pierce. Saturday was no different as the sophomore hurler got the nod in the Black and Gold's first ever meeeting against Malone and threw her fifth complete game in as many starts. Andraos gave up just one unearned run on two hits while striking out five batters and walking two. With the way the Malvern, Pa. native was popping the mitt, her offense did more than enough at the plate.

Stephanie Kulp opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with an RBI single that brought home Heather Lutz. Maria Spinosa was up next and pushed Brittany Smith across the dish with a sacrifice fly into foul territory in left field.

Millersville broke it open with seven runs in the third and the rally began with three-straight singles off the bats of Danielle DiFilippo, Gabbie Berry and Ashley Cantiello. The next batter, Lutz, reached on on a single to left field that allowed DiFilippo to score. Brittany Smith then cleared the bases with a double to left center that put the Marauders up 6-0 and they weren't done yet. One out later, Kulp scored Smith with a base knock back up the middle and after a flyout from Spinosa, Jordan Sheffield hit an inside-the-park homer and Millersville was up 9-0.

The Pioneers scored their lone run in the fourth but the Marauders would add to their lead.

In the bottom of the frame, Millersville scored four more runs thanks to an RBI single from Spinosa, a two-run single by Smith, an RBI double from DiFilippo, and a one-run single by Berry.

DiFilippo and Berry both registered three hits to support the offensive onslaught.

GAME TWO RECAP

In game two, Chowan scored first to open the game and led 1-0 before the Marauders had even seen a pitch.

In the bottom of the first, Sheffield reached on a fielding error by the first baseman and later came around to score on a Cantiello single. Spinosa made it 2-1 in favor of Millersville the next inning when she grounded the ball to the shortstop but the first baseman dropped the throw over and Lutz came in to score.

In the third, DiFilippo scored Sheffield with an RBI double and Mandy Hammond put the Marauders up 4-1 in the fourth with an infield single to second base that brought in Kulp.

In the sixth, Millersville added two insurance runs that proved to be very important when it was all said and done. With two outs, DiFilippo had an RBI single and Berry followed her with an RBI double.

The Hawks pulled within one, 6-5, in the top of the seventh with an RBI single and a three-run home run but that is where the score would stand as the Marauders are 2-0 against Chowan this season.

Amanda Wink (1-3) earned the win with 6.2 innings pitched and gave up five runs, all earned, on eight hits while recording one strikeout and three walks. In relief, Cantiello earned her first save of the season and second of her career with a third of an inning pitched.

DiFilippo and Hammond both had two hits apiece.

GAME THREE RECAP

Sheffield led off against Bowie State and on the first pitch she saw, the sophomore shortstop smashed the ball over the wall in right-center field for her second home run of the season. In the same inning, Cantiello hit a single through the right side and DiFilippo crossed the dish to make it 2-0 in favor of Millersville.

In the third, the Marauders put up a five spot on the scoreboard. Berry started things with a single to center field and DiFilippo came around to score after the center fielder let the ball get by her on an error. After Berry advanced to second on a groundout, Lutz was hit by a pitch and both runners moved up on a wild pitch, which allowed Berry to score. RBI singles from Smith, Kulp and Sheffield gave Millersville a 7-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs scored their only run with an RBI single in the fourth before the Marauders went up eight in the next inning with run-scoring single by DiFilippo as the Black and Gold improved to 9-0 all-time against Bowie State.

Cantiello (2-0) went the distance and gave up one earned run on six hits to go with five strikeouts and one walk. DiFilippo led the way with three hits in four at-bats, two runs scored and an RBI. On the day, the junior second baseman hit a blistering .727 at the dish with eight hits in 11 at-bats. Berry was hot as well through the three games with a 5-of-11 (.455) performance in the box.

Millersville rounds out its play in the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament on Sunday with a 9 a.m. game against #22 West Virginia Wesleyan.
