Resilient Warrior Defense Too Much to Handle for Marauders

Box Score East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Saturday afternoon against arguably the best defense in the PSAC, Millersville came up short 57-54 on the road against East Stroudsburg in a crucial PSAC East game.

The Warriors (13-9, 8-4 PSAC East) increased their win streak to four games and defeated the Marauders for just the second time in the last 16 head-to-head meetings. Millersville (11-10, 6-5 PSAC East) dropped its third straight for the first time since the end of the 2011-12 season. The Marauders were held to just 54 points on 16-of-49 (32.7 percent) shooting from the field. Millersville's last four losses have come by a total of just nine points. 

East Stroudsburg led by as many as 11 on three separate occasions in the second half and was up 35-24 with 17:37 to play in the game. Millersville slowly began to chip away at the deficit but couldn't get any closer than three points until Carly Gallagher flipped the switch. The Warriors led 47-43 with 3:37 to play in the second half before the East Stroudsburg, Pa. native drilled a triple and scored three more on a two-plus-one. The Marauders were up 49-47 with 3:04 to play and had their first advantage since leading 19-17 at the 6:58 mark of the first half.

Jessica Martin scored four straight for the home team and the lead was back in the Warriors' favor, 51-49. Twice, Millersville cut the margin to one point and trailed East Stroudsburg 53-52 with just 54 seconds remaining. Ryann Fiascki then dropped a huge 3-pointer from the left wing and pushed the Warriors lead back to four.

East Stroudsburg called a timeout to talk things over before two made free throws from Celeste Robinson tightened the deficit to two, 56-54 with 24 seconds on the clock. Helena Gemmell made one of two at the charity stripe and for the third consecutive game, the Marauders had a chance to tie or win with the final shot.

Gallagher's 3-point look didn't go but Millersville got the rebound and had another chance. A 3-pointer by Sabina Mehmedovic from the left wing came up short and the buzzer sounded. The Marauders fell to 1-4 on the season in games decided by five points or less.

The two squads combined for just 48 points on 18-of-55 (32.7 percent) shooting in the first half. Millersville used a 10-3 run to go up 19-15 before East Stroudsburg closed the half on a 13-1 run and led 28-20 heading into the locker rooms.

Gallagher tallied a game-high 23 points, 16 of which came in the second half, on 6-of-13 shooting (3-for-8 from 3-point land) and made eight of her nine free throw attempts. The redshirt junior also had six rebounds, three assists and one steal. Shelby Reimer was the other Marauder in double-figures with 11 points for a third-straight game.

Celeste Robinson was in foul trouble all day and finished with just five points as she was 1-of-3 from the field and 3-for-5 at the charity stripe. Robinson has only scored 14 points in four career games against the Warriors and was held scoreless when these two teams met on Dec. 7. 

Millersville returns home on Dec. 12 to take on Mansfield in the annual "Pink Day" game with tip set for 6 p.m.
