Box Score Winston-Salem, N.C. - Six Marauders produced at least two hits as Millersville rolled to its first victory of the season by a 7-4 score Saturday at Winston-Salem State.
Seniors
Zach Stone and
Dan Johnson each recorded three hits.
Dan Stoltzfus went 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI.
Mark Stuckey went 2-for-5 with a RBI and stolen base.
Chas McCormick and
David Pine both produced two hits and drove in two runs. The team totaled 14 hits one day after managing six hits and one run against Winston-Salem State (1-4).
Senior
Tad Barton surrendered two early runs on four hits, four walks and two hit batsmen, but he blanked the Rams in the third and fourth to keep the Marauders close.
John Brogan (1-0) earned his second career win after pitching a perfect fifth.
Jesse Mowen and
Sean Stephenson added scoreless innings. Stephenson, however, was chased in the eighth after allowing two runs on two walks and a hit, but senior
Adam Zipko escaped an eighth inning jam and worked through the ninth for his 12th career save.
Millersville (1-1) stranded runners in each of the first three innings, and the Rams jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a run in the first and one more in the second. The Marauders got onto the scoreboard in the fourth when Pine drove in Stoltzfus with one of the team's three singles in the inning. The Marauders took the lead for good in the fifth. Stone drew a one-out walk and Johnson doubled him home to tie the game.
Tyler McDonald reached on an error. Stoltzfus drove in Johnson, and McCormick followed a Stuckey single with a RBI ground out.
Millersville built upon the 4-2 lead in the seventh with a RBI double from Stuckey and another RBI ground out from McCormick.
Winston-Salem State threatened to retake the lead in the eighth. After drawing two walks and gettng a RBI double from Alex Grubb off of Stephenson, the Rams' Colby Keane singled home a run off of Zipko. With runners on second and third and just one out, Zipko struck out two of the next three batters to preserve the Marauder lead.
Millersville tacked on a run in the top of the ninth when Pine doubled home McCormick, and Zipko worked his way through the bottom of the inning to close the victory.
Winston-Salem State's Aaron Hatch (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits and two walks in 4.1 innings.
Stone has started his senior season with five hits in eight at bats and has reached base seven times in 10 plate appearances. He is now just five hits away from becoming the fourth player in Millersville history with 200 career hits.
The Marauders and Rams close out the three-game series Sunday at 12 p.m.
