West Chester Overcomes 18-Point Second Half Deficit to Defeat Millersville

Box Score West Chester, Pa. - West Chester turned 21 Millersville turnovers into 25 points and converted its free throws down the stretch to win 85-82 and maintain its stranglehold on first place in the Eastern Division.

The Golden Rams (15-6, 10-1 PSAC East) outscored the Marauders (11-9, 6-4 PSAC East) 20-9 over the final six minutes and 40 seconds of the second half. During that span, West Chester was 5-of-9 from the field and 9-for-13 at the charity stripe. During the same stretch, Millersville made just two of its seven field goal attempts (0-of-4 on 3-pointers), was 5-for-10 at the free throw line and turned the ball over four times.

Alex Stam drained a triple at the 14:06 mark of the second half to give the Marauders a 65-47 lead--the biggest advantage that either team had all night. West Chester then mounted a 30-9 run over the next 11:15, which was capped by two of Dallas Ely's 17 points at the 2:51 mark. Ely came in as the PSAC's leading scorer averaging 19.9 points per game and dropped 29 the last time these two teams met.

Sabina Mehmedovic sank two free throws and Stam added another to knot it back up at 77-77 with just over two minutes to play. The Golden Rams increased their lead to five but thanks to three more points from Sabina and a deuce by Celeste Robinson, Millersville was able to hang around and trailed by one, 83-82 with just 11 seconds on the clock.

Yasmin Cooper fouled Anna Kuntz who made both of her free throws and that set the scene for the Marauders' final possession. Shelby Reimer came up empty on a 3-point attempt at the buzzer, which sealed the victory for the home team.

West Chester turned the ball over only two times in the second half and on the night, outscored Millersville 25-11 in points off turnovers. The Golden Rams also attempted 44 free throws (25-44) because of 31 Marauder fouls. That is the most free throws a Millersville opponent has attempted dating back to at least the 2002-03 season. It was an absolute battle in the paint as the two teams combined for 84 points (42-42) in the lane.

Cooper earned her second double-double in as many games with 15 points and 13 rebounds on 7-of-13 shooting from the field. Robinson led all scorers with 19 points, 12 of which came in the second half, to go with five assists, four rebounds and one steal.

Carly Gallagher tallied 17 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and was 2-for-5 from behind the arc. Reimer had 11 points, two steals, one rebound and made three of her eight 3-point looks. Sabina tied a career-high in points with 11 as the fifth and final Marauder in double-figures.

Millersville now sits in fifth place in the East and will travel to East Stroudsburg on Saturday to take on the fourth place Warriors. Tipoff for that game is set for 1 p.m.
