Marauders Round Out Play in Shaw Challenge with Pair of Victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Raleigh, N.C. – The Millersville softball team rebounded nicely on day two of the Shaw Challenge to beat Barton 6-5 and Chowan 4-2.

The Marauders (2-2) won their first ever meeting with the Bulldogs (1-5) and improved to 4-1 all-time against the winless Hawks (0-11).

In game one, Jordan Sheffield got things going in the top of the first with a leadoff single before a Danielle DiFilippo sacrifice moved her to second. Gabbie Berry then put runners on the corners with a single and starting pitcher, Ashley Cantiello, helped herself with a two-run single.

The very next inning, Millersville's lone senior, Taylor Odell-Smith opened the frame with a single and Stephanie Kulp brought her in with an RBI double. Sheffield then continued her hot start to the season with an RBI single that pushed Kulp across the plate and the Marauders were up 4-0 early.

Barton cut the margin to 4-1 with an RBI double in the bottom of the second but Millersville wasn't done. Freshman Heather Lutz began the top of the third with a double before advancing to third on a passed ball. Another newcomer, Maria Spinosa, then put Millersville up 5-1 with a sacrifice fly to center. After a single and back-to-back walks, Sheffield brought in yet another run with a sacrifice fly of her own. The Marauders held a commanding 6-1 lead after three innings.

The Bulldogs scored one in the third and three more in the seventh before Millersville escaped with the one-run win. Barton stranded eight runners on the game and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.

The Marauders tallied nine hits and only struck out once the entire game. Sheffield and Cantiello each had two RBIs while Spinosa and Kulp each had an RBI as well. In the circle, Cantiello (1-0) gave up five earned runs on 11 hits while striking out six and walking four through 6.2 innings. Amanda Wink earned the first save of her career with two-thirds of an inning in relief.

Millersville is off until March 6 when it travels to Philadelphia for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
