Washington, Pa. - Millersville wrestling started the 2014-15 season on top. With
Thomas Nulty and
Aram Moffitt winning their respective weight classes, the Marauders tied for first place with Seton Hill at the season-opening Washington and Jefferson Invitational.
Along with Nulty (141) and Moffitt (197), sophomore
Austin Camacci (125) and freshman
Ian Shannon (165) reached the finals and finished in second place. Freshman heavyweight
Jordan Wertz placed fourth. Freshman
Shane Ruhnke won fifth place at 157 pounds as did
Nico Demetrio at 149. Freshman
David Wuestner (285) and redshirt sophomore
Nick Haegele (141) placed sixth, giving Millersville nine total placewinners.
As a team, Millersville totaled 153 points, tying with Seton Hill in a field of 14 teams. While only 10 wrestlers--one in each weight class--counted toward Millersville's team score, a total of 12 different Marauders won at least three matches at the event.
Camacci breezed into the championship match at 125 pounds, scoring a 17-1 technical fall over Manchester's Karl Wilhelm in th eopening match and then picking up a 5-0 decision over Thiel's Vince Vahaly. He advanced past Waynesburg's Gordon Bieber before falling 6-2 in the finals to Seton Hill's Mike Soria.
Nulty was the master of close matches in his title run. After a first round pin and second round major decision, Nulty won his final three matches by a total of four points. He topped Wheeling Jesuit's Skyler Terrell 8-6 in the final.
Also at 141 pounds,
Nick Haegele lost his first match by an 11-7 decision to Wheeling Jesuit's Preston Bowshier. He rallied with wins in his next four matches, including a tech fall and a pin. He was forced to forfeit his final two matches, however, putting him in sixth place.
Demetrio delivered a 5-2 record with three pins in his run to fifth place. He picked up wins in his first two matches before falling in the quarterfinals. He bounced back quickly with a pair of pins in his next two matches before falling in the consolation semis. In the fifth-place bout, he pinned Alderson-Broaddus' Matt Harris at the 3:37 mark.
Ruhnke posted a 5-2 record and racked up four falls and a major decision. His major decision came by a 15-4 score. He scored pins in his next four matches, including a third-period fall against Thiel's Chris Nuss in the third period.
Shannon made a quick run to the title bout of the 165-pound class. He pinned Heidelberg's Steve Murray in the first match (5:53) and then notched a 10-2 major decision and a 3-2 decision in his next two. Thiel's Brandan Collins ended his bid with a pin in 2:18.
Moffitt scored two lopsided wins early with a pin (2:21) and a 10-0 major decision in his first two matches. In the championship semis, he edged Washington and Lee's Bennett Lewis by a 3-2 score. He then defeated Wheeling Jesuit's Maxwell Lacy by a 7-3 count in the finals.
Both of Millersville's young heavyweights placed. Wertz worked his way to the third-place match before losing by fall to Waynesburg's Greg Kumer. Wuestner won four matches including a first round pin of Theil's Travis Combine.
Millersville quickly enters PSAC dual action as it hosts Shippensburg on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.
