Complete Game Notes (.PDF)GAME OVERVIEW• The Millersville women's basketball team didn't fair well in its PSAC East opener in West Chester. The Golden Rams only led by six at the break (45-39) but outscored the Marauders 44-30 in the second half en route to an 89-69 loss for the Black and Gold. Millersville did manage to shoot 46 percent (29-of-63) from the floor on the night but its 26 turnovers were simply too much to overcome as West Chester only turned the ball over eight times and turned those Marauder turnovers into 19 points.
Yasmin Cooper led the way for Millersville with 16 points,
Shelby Reimer had 15,
Carly Gallagher turned in 12, and
Alexis Martin tallied the fourth double double of her career and first of the season with 10 points to go with 10 boards.
• Millersville and East Stroudsburg have faced each other 75 times in the all-time series and the Marauders lead 49-26 while having taken 14 of the last 17 meetings. These two teams have seen each other six times in the last two seasons alone with four matchups coming in the regular season and the other two occurring in the first round of the PSAC Tournament both last season and the season before. Maureen Smith is just 3-7 in her coaching career against Millersville but has won two straight.
• This game always seems to be a defensive struggle and only three times since the beginning of the 2009-10 season has a team scored more than 75 points and the Marauders did it all three times. The last two times, neither team has put up more than 57 points and those two contests have been decided by a total of four points.
• This team will undoubtedly be led by a pair of forwards in senior Jessica Martin and sophomore Allison Howard. Martin scored 17 points to go with six rebounds, five blocks and one steal in the Warriors season-opening win at Lock Haven (87-74). However, Allison Martin was held to just one point and it came from the free throw line in 19 minutes of action. Ryann Fiascki led East Stroudsburg in scoring with 24 points as she was 9-of-11 from the floor and also had five rebounds and an assist.
• After opening the season with two games at home as part of the Atlantic Region Challenge, seven of the Marauders' next eight games come away from Pucillo Gymnasium and that started with West Chester on Wednesday. The lone home game in the stretch will be against Mansfield for the first game of December on the third. On the other side, East Stroudsburg opened the season away from Koehler Fieldhouse but will play its next three games at home.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT• East Stroudsburg was picked to finish one spot behind Millersville in the PSAC's eastern division in fifth place but returned all five of its starters from a season ago. The five returning starters have combined for 224 career starts, and redshirt senior Andrea Veres has made 79 career starts. Also coming back is Jessica Martin who averaged 12.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game a season ago as well as fellow forward Allison Howard who dropped 11.3 points per contest and brought down 7.1 boards per game. Martin is the only player in the PSAC East with three all-conference awards, and one of two in the PSAC along with Clarion's Hannah Heeter. Martin has led ESU in scoring and rebounding two straight seasons, and in blocks all three seasons. She ranks second in ESU history and 10th in PSAC history with 207 career blocks.
