Millersville, Pa. - Millersville wrestling hosts the Mid-Penn Duals and the 11th annual "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Classic on Saturday and Sunday in the campus' Student Memorial Center (SMC).
The Mid-Penn Duals is in its second year of existence and features eight area teams including Division I Franklin & Marshall and Sacred Heart, Division II's Shippensburg, Shorter and American International and Division III powers York and Stevens Institute of Technology. The "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Classic is an individual tournament with 300 wrestlers in the 10 collegiate weight classes.
WIth four mats running simultaneously at Saturday's duals and with the size of the "Shorty" field, both events are being held in the Student Memorial Center (SMC) for the first time. The building is located at 21 South George Street.
Saturday's Mid-Penn Duals begins at 10 a.m. with Millersville (2-2) facing American International (6-1) as part of four first-round match-ups. There will be three rounds in the championship bracket and three rounds in the consolation bracket to determine third and fourth place. Millersville is looking to bounce back from back-to-back losses to nationally-ranked Mercyhurst and Gannon. A bright spot for the Marauders has been the performance of freshman
Aram Moffitt at 197 pounds. Moffitt is 13-9 overall, 3-1 in PSAC duals and has won five of his last six bouts.
The "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Classic begins at 9 a.m. It attracts Division I performers from all across the country. Last year, winners included wrestlers from Penn, Lehigh, Virginia, Penn State, Ohio State and Cornell. The event is named in the memory of former Marauder coach Floyd Hitchcock, who led the program from 1984 until his passing in 2002. Hitchcock won 180 duals in his 18 seasons as the head coach and produced 32 Division I national qualifiers and five PSAC Champions.
