MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville wrestling team hosted the 16th annual Shorty Hitchcock Classic, where the Marauders placed 14th out of 54 teams.
Sophomore Chase Bish led the way for Millersville, finishing fifth in the open. Bish advanced to the quarterfinals before losing by decision to a two-time All-American from Kutztown. He then made an impressive run through the consolation bracket, earning three wins by decision to secure fifth place at 165 pounds.
"Chase put together one of the grittiest runs I've ever seen here," said head coach Jerry Boland. "After a tough loss by takedown to a two-time All-American in the quarters, he put together three straight wins against Division I opponents. He wrestled his tail off all day."
Jaxon Townsend and Cole Dubois also earned placements in their respective weight classes. Townsend dropped his first match in the round of 16, sending him to the consolation bracket. The freshman responded with three wins by fall and two by technical fall before eventually falling to a Navy wrestler, placing him eighth in 197.
Dubois reached the quarterfinals after earning a major decision in his opening bout. He won his next match before falling by decision in his fourth match, placing him eighth in 184.
"We saw a lot of good things today. Cole and Jaxon finishing with top-eight performances after not placing two weeks ago is a huge improvement—not just the results, but how they got after it today," Boland said. "The same goes for the rest of our guys. Sure, we wanted to see some guys go a little deeper, but it was a very tough tournament. Our guys got better today, and we will look to continue that trend as we prepare for PSAC competition."
Millersville returns to action on Nov. 24 when the Marauders host Shippensburg in Pucillo Gymnasium for the PSAC opener.
