Balanced Attack Leads No. 4 Marauders Past Mercyhurst

Box Score Erie, Pa. - The No. 4-ranked Millersville field hockey team received four goals from four different players in Sunday's 4-2, non-conference road win over Mercyhurst.

Millersville (2-0) dominated every facet of the game, out-shooting the Lakers by an 18-4 margin and holding a 15-5 edge in penalty corners. The Millersville offense has generated 11 goals from 10 different players in its first two games.

The Marauders are now 2-0 for the second consecutive season--a feat that hasn't occurred since 1980-81.

Champayne Hess, Sarah Bomberger, Megan Donlan and Hannah Whitman all scored their first goals of the season. Three Marauder scores came in the second half, snapping a 1-1 halftime tie.

Hess put Millersville on the board 12:23 into the game, cashing in an assist from Katelyn Zapp. Mercyhurst's Marissa Faso tied the game with just under 10 minutes left in the first half, and the score remained tied into the break.

But just 3:54 into the second half, Brittany Troutman assisted Bomberger to put Millersville in front, 2-1. The lead extended less than five minutes later when Donlan tallied her first of the season. Mercyhurst answered with Blair Pembleton's goal, cutting the Marauder advantage to 3-2 with 8:23 to go.

Newcomer Hannah Whitman dashed Mercyhurst's comeback hopes with 3:05 left in the game with her first goal as a Marauder. Alicia Youtz provided the helper.

Millersville is now 8-4 all-time against Mercyhurst and the two teams will play in a PSAC contest at Biemesderfer Stadium on Oct. 9. Millersville returns to action on Sept. 14 at Seton Hill.
