Millersville Sweeps Chestnut Hill to Open the Season

Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville volleyball team opened its 2013 campaign against the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College Friday night, and used a stifling defense to win in straight sets, 3-0.
Chestnut Hill posted a .012 hitting percentage on the night and Millersville tallied 15 blocks above the net. Millersville rolled in the first (25-15) and third (25-8) and held off a late charge by Chestnut Hill to win the second in extra points, 26-24.
The first set stood knotted up at 10-10 before the hosts went on a 15-5 run to close out the set. The Black and Gold hit .300 in the set.
The Marauders led the next set by as many as six and were two points from closing the win at 23-17 when the Griffins rallied. The visitors scored seven of the next eight points to even the set at 24-24. That is where the run ended for the Griffins as Millersville scored the next two points on a kill from Rebecca Roman and a service ace from Taylor Smith.
Chestnut Hill could not quell Millersville's attack that hit a blistering .333 in the third set. With Mary Paul serving, the Marauders pushed an early lead to 12-3. Jessica Franz helped the Marauders rip off five consecutive points to extend the advantage to 18-5, and Millersville led by as many as 15 points.
Rebecca Roman led the Millersville offense with 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Katie Lesinski also knocked home nine kills. Newcomer, Erika Smith supported the attack with 14 assists followed by Jessica Franz in a close second with 12 helpers.
Brooklyn Smith totaled nine digs while Franz was credited with six. Mary Paul accumulated four blocks with another three came from Roman.
Millersville returns to Pucillo Gymnasium Saturday to face Holy Family at 11 a.m. and Franklin Pierce at 3 p.m.
