No. 4 Field Hockey Powers Past Lindenwood

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - No. 4-ranked Millersville field hockey opened its 2013 campaign Friday with an overpowering 7-0 victory over visiting Lindenwood. The Marauders received goals from six different players.

Millersville (1-0) won its fourth consecutive season opener and has won those games by a combined 19-1 count. Friday's seven-goal outpouring marked the most in a season opener since 1974 and the most lopsided win in an opener since 1973.

The Marauders peppered Lindenwood keeper Victoria Gil with 23 shots on goal and out-shot the visitors by a 31-3 margin. Lauren Sotzin needed to turn away only two shots to register the 11th shutout of her career. Millersville also totaled 28 penalty corners--the most since 2009.

Margaret Thorwart couldn't have started her collegiate career any better, scoring the first and last goals of the game. Senior Samantha Ruane scored once and added two helpers. Jayde Kauffman tallied one goal and assist. Katelyn Zapp, Alicia Youtz and freshman Arianna Grays also scored.

It took 20:46 for Millersville to break through. Champayne Hess fired a shot that sneaked through Gil's pads and Thorwart redirected it from the left side of the cage. The freshman's goal started the barrage.

Millersville poured in two more goals--one from Zapp and one from Kauffman--in the next four minutes to take a 3-0 lead into the break.

The second half was absolute domination by the Marauders. Lindenwood was held without a shot while the Marauders scored four goals. Youtz started the scoring just under eight minutes into the period. Grays, Ruane and Thorwart followed in a stretch of nine minutes.

Millersville now hits the road for three consecutive away games. Mercyhurst hosts the Marauders on Sept. 8 at 12 p.m.
