Harborcreek, Pa. - Robby Rowe fired the lowest 36-hole total of his Millersville career, and Robert Coyne charged up the leaderboard on day two, helping the men's golf team to a seventh-place finish at the Mercyhurst Invitational.
Millersville entered the event as the defending champ but posted a score 32 shots higher than in the previous season. Playing without the services of Conor Gilbert didn't help. Gilbert had been the team's top finisher in each of the first three tournaments with three top 10's and two third-place finishes.
The Marauders opened with a 315 and improved with a 306 on day two. They finished ahead of PSAC foes Mercyhurst and Gannon but trailed Clarion by three and West Chester by six. University of Toronto shot scores of 287 and 297 for a 584 total and ran away with the team title by 26 shots.
Rowe posted back-to-back rounds of 2-over-par, matching his career-low 18-hole total in back-to-back days. His 4-over-par 148 and sixth-place finish was the best of his career. He was just three shots off the pace set by Toronto's Phil Arci, who won in a playoff over two of his teammates and Daemen's Eli Cobti. Rowe has now shot four consecutive rounds at 75 or better.
Coyne's up-and-down fall campaign continued. After a 9-over-par 81 on Sunday, he shot the third-best round of the tournament on Monday. His 2-under-par 70 pushed him into a tie for ninth and gave him his second consecutive top-10 finish.
Kevin Davis tied for 27th at 13-over-par. Jonathon Heile tied for 57th and freshman Nathan Hertzog tied for 62nd among the 76 finishers.
Millersville returns to the course on Oct. 7 for the Challenge at Mystic Rock hosted by California (Pa.).
