Farmington, Pa. - With top player Conor Gilbert still sidelined by injury, the Millersville men's golf team managed a 10th-place finish at the three-round Challenge at Mystic Rock.
The Marauders struggled to find consistency without Gilbert anchoring the top of the lineup. Four of the five Marauders shot under 80 but no more than two of them did so in the same round and only Robby Rowe managed three sub-80 rounds.
Finishing 10th in a field of 16 teams--mostly Atlantic Regional teams--was a blow for the Marauders' regional standing. The Marauders--with Gilbert in the lineup--placed second against nearly the same field two weeks ago at the Glade Springs Invitational.
Millersville tied with Mercyhurst with a 955 total, finished one shot behind Gannon, six behind Concord and just nine behind West Chester. California (Pa.), the host, totaled a 907 for the team title. California was the only team in the field to post a round under 300.
Rowe's 7-over-par 79 in the opening round set him back, but he managed to bounce back with a 75 in both the second and third rounds to finish in 15th place. Kevin Davis provided Millersville's best score in the opening round and also his best round of the season at 3-over-par 75. Davis, however, posted an 80 in the second round and an 84 in the third to drop into a tie for 37th.
Robert Coyne's up-and-down season continued with an 83 on day one and an 84 in round two. His 75 in the third round match Rowe for the team's best round of the day. It also pushed him up to a tie for 44th.
Chris Fieger tied for 55th with a 250 total. Jonathon Heile tied for 65th.
Millersville has one final tune-up before the PSAC Championships. The Gannon Invitational, held at Peek-N-Peek Resort starts on Oct. 13.
