Box Score Millersville, Pa. - The No. 2-ranked Millersville field hockey team completely controlled play and statistically dominated visiting Seton Hill Friday afternoon. But the only numbers that mattered were the two on the scoreboard, and the Marauders received quite a fight from the Griffins before notching a 2-1 win.
Millersville boosted its record to 6-0 overall, 1-0 in PSAC play and 9-0 all-time against the Griffins (3-5, 0-1 PSAC). The Marauders out-shot Seton Hill 18-5, held a 21-2 advantage in corners and forced Seton Hill keeper Autumn Reid to make 11 saves.
Samantha Ruane and
Katelyn Zapp recorded the only two shots that got by Reid, and Zapp's game-winner came on a late, second half penalty stroke.
Ruane started the scoring just 5:07 into the contest. Following a penalty corner,
Brittany Troutman pushed the ball into the center of the circle, which Ruane gathered and shot low past Reid.
While the Marauders kept play in Seton Hill's defensive end the majority of the contest, the Griffins broke away, and Natasha Nichols founding a streaking Emily Hutsko, who knotted the game at 1-1 at the 22:59 mark.
Millersville continued to put pressure on the Griffin defense, but Reid stood solid in goal. It wasn't until the there was just 15:03 remaining that Zapp earned a penalty stroke. After a Millersville corner,
Rachel Dickinson's shot was blocked in front of the cage, Zapp's follow up was saved, and during the ensuing battle for possession, Reid dove to the ground, wiping out Zapp.
Zapp buried the stroke in the upper left corner of the cage, notching the eventual game-winning goal and her second tally of the season.
Millersville faces a quick turnaround as it hosts PSAC foe Mansfield Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
