No. 3 Field Hockey Overwhelms No. 2 West Chester, 3-1

Box Score West Chester, Pa. - In a rematch of the 2012 PSAC Championship, No. 3-ranked Millersville shook off an early blow from No. 2 West Chester and stormed past the homestanding Golden Rams for a 3-1 victory Wednesday.

Sarah Bomberger and Rachel Dickinson hooked up twice on penalty corners, and junior Alicia Youtz sealed Millersville's first-ever win over the Golden Rams in nine tries. Millersville improved to 4-0 and handed the two-time defending national champions a second loss. West Chester's losses have come against the No. 1 and No. 3 teams in Division II.

Using waves of substitutions, Millersville took control of the contest in the latter stages of the first period. All three of Millersville's goals came after the 30-minute mark, and it held a 7-3 edge in shots in the second half. It was an efficient offensive effort, scoring three times on just five penalty corners. West Chester took 15 corners, including nine in the first half, but the defense limited West Chester to 10 shots and Marauder keeper Lauren Sotzin turned away seven of the eight shots sent her way.

The home team, however, struck first. Megan Callanan scored her fifth goal of the season on an assist from Lauren McGinley 16:08 into the half. The 1-0 lead stood until Bomberger took a penalty corner and entered the ball to Dickinson at the top of the circle. Dickinson rifled a shot that found its way past Audree Bonavita.

Just over three minutes into the second period, Bomberger and Dickinson replicated the first goal for the eventual game-winner. The score was Dickinson's fourth in the last two games and Bomberger's third assist of the season.

Millersville kept the pressure on West Chester, registering five shots from the 38:18 mark to the 44:50 mark. Bonavita was able to make saves on three of the four on goal to keep her team within one.

The Marauders boosted the lead to two at the 54:38 mark by making good on another corner. Only three minutes after entering the game, Youtz found the back of the cage after a pass from Hannah Whitman.

Trailing 3-1, West Chester went on the attack over the final 10 minutes, earning five penalty corners in the span. Sotzin stood firm and stopped three shots, including one as time expired.

Millersville has now out-scored its opponents 18-3 and have out-cornered its opponents 66-24. The Marauders also hold a 12-1 edge in second half goals.

Wednesday's win does not count in the PSAC standings, however. The conference match-up between the schools occurs at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium on Oct. 15.

Millersville sucessfully ended a 3-0 road swing Wednesday and returns home Saturday to start a three game homestand. Slippery Rock, which upset No. 7 Bloomsburg Wednesday, visits the Marauders at 12 p.m.
