Charleston, W.Va. - The Millersville men's golf team used final round 75's from Conor Gilbert, Robert Coyne and Robby Rowe to rally all the way from seventh place to a runner-up finish at the three-round Glade Springs Intercollegiate Championship held at Woodhaven Golf Club. Individually, junior Conor Gilbert paced the Marauders with a third-place finish.
A high finish was key for the Marauders eventual NCAA postseason hopes as all 16 teams in the field are members of the Atlantic Region. An opening round score of 321 buried the Marauders in seventh place. Millersville moved up the leaderboard on Monday with a 305, and it posted a 308 in the final round to finish in second place behind Indiana (Pa.). IUP pulled away from the field to finish with 907 total. The Marauders' 934 clipped West Chester by four strokes and Charleston by four.
Gilbert, the reigning PSAC Men's Golfer of the Week, put the finishing touches on a brilliant opening week of the season by shooting an 11-over-par 227, clinching his third top-10 finish in as many events and second consecutive third-place finish. His 3-over-par final round was key to Millersville's push toward the top of the leaderboard.
Coyne recovered from an opening round 81 to shoot a 2-over-par 74 in the second round and a 3-over-par 75 in the final round. Rowe rallied in similar fashion after an 83 on day one. Rowe closed with back-to-back rounds of 75 to shoot +17 for the tournament.
A veteran Marauder lineup also included Kevin Davis and Jonathon Heile. Davis posted rounds of 81, 80 and 83 to finish 28-over-par. Heile finished at 33-over after 54 holes.
Following three tournaments in just over a week, Millersville breaks for two weeks until it defends its crown at the Mercyhurst Invitational on Sept. 29-30.
