Harrisburg, Pa. - Through two events in 2013-14, Conor Gilbert owns two top-10 finishes. The junior continued his brilliant start to the season Wednesday at the Messiah Invitational, leading the Millersville men's golf team to a second-place finish in an 18-team field.
The Marauders finished with a 319, six shots behind host Messiah. With oppressive heat, the scoring conditions were difficult at the par 72 Blue Ridge Country Club. Millersville took runner-up honors despite posting its second-highest team score of the last two seasons. Only Muhlenberg's Chris Lucarelli (-1) shot an under par score.
Gilbert's 4-over-par 76 placed him a tie for third. He birdied three holes in the round and went out in 36. He dropped his score to 1-under-par on the day after a birdie on the par-4 12th hole, but a nine at the 15th and a bogey at the 16th dropped him to 5-over for the tournament. Gilbert quickly bounced back with a birdie at the par-5 17th.
Sophomore Robby Rowe also cracked the top 10, placing in a tie for ninth with a 6-over-par 78. Robert Coyne narrowly missed his second consecutive top-25 finish. He posted a 9-over-par 81 to tie for 26th. Chris Fieger tied for 43rd at 12-over-par. Jonathon Heile, who placed 10th Monday at the Hal Hansen Invitational, posted an 85 and tied for 46th.
Millersville has not finished lower than third in its last three trips to the Messiah Invitational. The Marauders play in the Charleston Invitational--a key Atlantic Region event--on Sept. 16-17 in Charleston, W.Va.
