
School Records Tumble at Lock Haven

Lock Haven, Pa. - Freshman Erin Madison broke the school record in the 400-meter hurdles and the 4x100-meter relay team set another school best time to lead the Marauders at the Lock Haven Qualifier meet on Saturday.
Madison crossed the finish line ahead of all the other competitors in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.52. The previous school record of 1:02.00 was set back in 1983 by Joyce VanGinhoven. Madison's time was both a PSAC qualifying mark and an NCAA provisional time. The freshman also met a conference standard in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.17.
The foursome of Kiara Allen, Jess Fritsche, Erin Mason, and Kayla Naughton helped break the school record in the 4x100-meter relay by three tenths of a second. The group completed the event in 48.03 and captured a second place finish. The school record in the event, prior to Saturday, was recorded 17 years ago in a time of 48.33.
Mason also finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.51 in the finals. The sophomore actually ran faster in the preliminaries (12.38) but still notched a conference qualifying time with her performance.
In the 200-meter dash Allen and Naughton ran top-five times for Millersville. Allen (25.26) placed second and Naughton (25.62) took fifth in the race. Both of those times were the best of the year for each athlete and met PSAC qualifying standards.
The second place trend continued for the Marauders in the long jump. Sophomore Mary Stewart jumped 5.30-meters and finished less than seven inches short of the best distance on the day. Stewart's jump was the best by a Marauder this year and qualified her for the conference championships next week. The sophomore also placed eighth in the high jump when she jumped over the bar at 1.52-meters.
A pair of top-10 times were recorded by Black and Gold athletes in the 1,500-meter run. Freshman Katie Hild took fifth when she crossed the final line in 5:03.97. Classmate Elizabeth Reese came in 10th with a result of 5:09.05.
Another school record was nearly broken in the hammer throw for the second straight week. Kellie Farris was just .04 meters away from the school best distance of 48.52 meters en route to a third place result (48.48 meters). Kovacs, the current school record holder in the event, finished right behind Farris in fourth with a distance of 47.55 meters. Vanessa Hower (45.41) finished seventh.
Hower impressed in the discuss throw for the second straight Saturday. The Juniata graduate launched the discuss 38.97 meters and qualified for the PSAC championships in the process. Kelly Kardos (27.80) took home a 14th place result.
In the 400-meter dash Amanda Long finished sixth with a time of 1:02.53. Meanwhile Megan Meyer grabbed another top-10 result in the 800-meter run when she crossed the line in seventh place at 2:19.60. Senior Sarah Mulvey was 14th after a result of 2:23.70. Both of those times were conference qualifying times.
In the long distance runs, Millersville had five athletes finish with top-10 results. The 5,000-meter run saw Sarah Fink cross the final line third with a time of 20:02.38. In the 3,000-meter run Mallory Austin led four Marauders with a fifth place finish at 12:04.44. Emily Leighow came in seventh, Megan O'Neill eighth, and Samantha Martin ninth.
The Marauders now have one week to prepare for the PSAC Championships. Millersville hosts the conference meet from May 9-11 at Biemsderfer Stadium. For more information on the PSAC Championships click here.
