Women's Results I PSAC Championships Central
Millersville, Pa. - On the final day of competition at the 2013 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships the Millersville women's track and field team received All-PSAC performances in four different events. Freshmen Kayla Naughton and Erin Madison were each All-PSAC in their individual events and two Marauder relay teams also placed in the top-three for all-conference recognition on Saturday.
Millersville captured 51 overall team points and placed eighth in the final team standings at the championships. The eighth-place finish is the Marauders best result in two years and the 51 points is the most the team has accumulated at the PSAC meet since 2009.
Naughton was Millersville's first All-PSAC performer with her run in the 400-meter dash. After setting the school record in the event yesterday, the freshman completed the event in 57.28 in the finals and accumulated six points for the team with her third place result. It was Millersville's first all-conference performance in the 400-meter run since Beth McKay placed third overall in 2000.
Madison received her second career All-PSAC honor after placing second in the 400-meter hurdles at the PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships in February. The Pocono Mountain East grad again finished second in the 400 hurdles with an NCAA Provisional time of 1:01.45. Her time reset her own school record in the event by .07 seconds.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Naughton, Kiara Allen, Erin Mason, and Jess Fritsche ran the second fastest time in school history to come away with a third-place result and the third All-PSAC award for the Black and Gold. The foursome completed the event in 47.68 seconds and were just .58 seconds behind Shippensburg's team who finished first. The group set the school record yesterday in the event and added six points to Millersville's overall team score.
In the final event of the conference championships, the 4x400-meter relay team ran away with a third-place finish and yet another all-conference performance for the host institution. Madison, Naughton, Mason, and Megan Meyer completed the race in 3:52.67 and broke the previous school record by almost a full two seconds.
With two relay teams placing inside the top three, it marks the first time since 1995 that the Marauders have earned All-PSAC awards in two relay events at the conference championships.
Allen also competed in the 100-meter dash finals and was hundreths of seconds away from garnering all-conference honors. The freshman sprinter improved by three spots from her seed time and placed fourth when she crossed the finish line at 12.29. Allen gathered five points towards the team score with her result and was just .09 seconds away from placing second in the race. The freshman also placed eighth in the 200-meter dash finals with a time of 26.27.
Senior Sarah Mulvey ran her last PSAC Championship event in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Boyertown product finished strong for the Marauders as she ran the second fastest time in school history and was just 11 seconds short of reaching the NCAA Provisional mark. Mulvey crossed the finish line at 11:26.38 and ended with a ninth-place result.
Freshman Vanessa Hower picked up points for Millersville in the only field event that the Marauders had a competitor in on the day. Hower did not have her best throw of the year but was still able to place sixth with a distance of 36.64 meters.
Shippensburg won the women's team championship with 151 total points. The Raiders have now won the past four women's championships.
Millersville will have to wait to find out if the NCAA provisional results reached by Madison, Allen, and Ann Kovacs will qualify them for the NCAA Championships later in May. Stay tuned to millersvilleathletics.com and @MarauderNews on Twitter for updates.
