Box Score Winston-Salem, N.C. - Millersville couldn't make its early lead hold up in a 4-1 loss to Shippensburg in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Friday. The Marauders now face elimination Saturday at 11 a.m. in a match-up against either East Stroudsburg or Seton Hill.
Shippensburg (29-21) itself faced early elimination against Millersville (39-17) but instead delivered 11 hits and four runs off of the NCBWA and Daktronics Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year
Chris Murphy (12-2). Murphy and the Marauders took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when
Mark Stuckey drove in
Zach Stone with a single.
Millersville had its opportunities to extend the lead but stranded six runners in the first three innings and left 10 on base in the nine inning game. Shippensburg cashed in on its chances, though. Cody Kulp ripped a double to left center in the fourth that tied the game, but the second run attempted to score from first was cut down at the plate on a brilliant relay from
Jeremy Musser to
Tyler Orris to
Mike Lebo.
Kulp struck again with another double in the sixth, giving Shippensburg the lead. Millersville saved another run when a Stuckey-Orris-Lebo relay pegged Tyler Shover at the plate. Millersville couldn't answer after two singles started the seventh, and Shippensburg made the Marauders pay with RBIs from David McKoloskey and Cal Hogan.
Millersville had its hopes of a three-run comeback snatched away in the ninth when McKoloskey snared a Musser gap shot, ending the game.
Shippensburg's 11 hits were the most allowed by Murphy this season.
Dan Johnson singled three times for the Marauders. Shover led Shippensburg with three hits. Tom Bush (6-4) earned the win after scattering nine hits and a run over seven innings. Austin Bartley notched a two-inning save.
Seton Hill and East Stroudsburg play at 6 p.m. The Marauders play the loser of that game. Shippensburg and Winston-Salem State play in an elimination game Saturday at 2:30 p.m. If Millersville wins its 11 a.m. game, it will play again at 6 p.m.
