Marauder Comeback Spoiled by Slippery Rock

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - After trailing Slippery Rock for the majority of the game, the Millersville women's lacrosse team made a valiant effort at a comeback on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Marauders, The Rock thwarted the comeback attempt and dealt Millersville a 16-15 defeat.

Trailing by a score of 9-3 in the first half and by as many as four goals with 21 minutes remaining in the game, the Marauders fought back to pull within one with just under 90 seconds left in action.

With the score 16-14, senior Ashley Henderson received a pass five yards in front of the goal and was immediately fouled by two Slippery Rock defenders. Henderson gathered herself at the top of the eight meter circle for the free position attempt and fired a laser towards the lower left corner and past The Rock goalkeeper Hannah Houde to bring the score to 16-15 in favor of Slippery Rock.

All Millersville needed to do was get possesion of the next draw control and take the ball down the field and score again to tie the game and forced overtime.

However, The Rock midfielder Lauren Laubauch snatched the ball out of mid-air on the draw control opportunity, and Slippery Rock ran out the final seconds of the game to complete the 16-15 win.

Millersville (4-4, 0-4 PSAC) has now lost four straight games after starting the season with four straight wins. Junior Caitlin Shannon led the Black and Gold attack with four goals and is now tied for second on the team with 17 scores this season. Three other Millersville attackers also recorded hat tricks against The Rock. Henderson, Hannah Vogel, and Kathryn Kehring all placed three shots in the back of the net against Houde.

Slippery Rock (3-4, 1-3 PSAC) captured its first conference victory behind the strong play of senior Holly Webb. Webb scored four times and picked up two goals and an assist in the second half alone. Six other Rock players recorded scores in the game while Houde notched a season high 15 saves.

The Marauders scored the first three goals of the game, but a nine-goal run by The Rock quickly put Millersville on its heels in the first half. Henderson (2) and freshman Abby Mack answered by scoring three times in a span of 53 seconds and Shannon found the back of the net with just over 40 seconds remaining in the opening frame to cut Slippery Rock's lead down to one at the break.

In the second period Slippery Rock outscored the home team 5-2 in the first 10 minutes to increase its advantage to 14-10.

Millersville responded with its own 5-2 scoring spree over the final 20 minutes of the game, but it was too little too late as the Marauders fell 16-15 in the end.

The 38 shots in the game was the most that Millersville has taken this season and the six free position goals were more than double the team's previous best for a game this year.

The Marauders aim to stop the four game skid tomorrow, April 6 when they host Edinboro at Comet Field at Penn Manor High School. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
