Farmington, Pa. - The Millersville men's golf team saw a small preview of what the NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional competition holds after competing in this weekend's Challenge at Mystic Rock. The Marauders placed ninth in a deep 12-team field.
Millersville closed last week ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Atlantic Region, which would be good enough to land it an at-large bid to the regional if the ranking holds. While the Marauders had won three of their last six tournaments, they did not look like the same team Sunday and Monday.
On Sunday, only Kevin Davis shot lower than 80, and the team sat in 10th place with a 320 total--22 shots back of Indiana (Pa.). Millersville did rally in the second round behind a 4-over-par 76 from Robby Rowe and a 6-over-par 78 from Conor Gilbert. Millersville improved its team score by two shots on day two and finished with a 638 total and in ninth place.
IUP, the region's top team, entered the day leading by five shots over Concord but posted a eighth highest second day score and slipped to fourth. Concord shot a 308 in the second round to hold off a charging Davis & Elkins squad, which shot a 301 on day two to finish one shot back.
The top Marauder finish was Jonathon Heile, who was competing as an individual. He opend with a 4-over-par 76 and closed with a 79 to finish at 11-over and in 13th place.
Rowe's 14-over total placed him in a tie for 16th. Gilbert tied for 27th and Davis tied for 36th. Rob Coyne tied for 38th and Matt Lutz tied for 58th in the 68-player field.
Millersville defends its team title at the Messiah Invitational on Tuesday and then awaits to learn its NCAA regional fate at the end of the week. The NCAA Atlant/East Super Regional is scheduled for May 6-8 at Speidel Golf Club in Wheeling, W.Va.
